Research programme to make data transactions more secure
Local photonics assembly specialists Alpha Contract Engineering (ACE) is partnering Nokia Technologies and Oxford University on a high-tech research programme funded by Innovate UK. The 12 month project titled Feasibility study of handheld Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) will make the use of cash machines and other highly sensitive and important data transactions secure.
Take part in the ‘International Year of Light’
UNESCO has declared 2015 to be the “International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies”. Visitors to LASER World of PHOTONICS, 22nd to 25th June in Munich, will be able to see this first hand alongside practical demonstrations, lectures from Nobel prize laureates and an expanded exhibition space.
Sensor measures narrowband LED & laser sources
A calibrated irradiance and dosage sensor, which measures narrowband LED and laser sources between 200 and 850nm, has been introduced by Ophir Photonics. The PD300RM automatically adjusts to provide correct power and energy measurements based on the specific wavelength designated by the user. This delivers a more accurate reading than traditional radiometers. The sensor also incorporates a cosine corrected quartz glass diffuser, suitable for UV r...
Piezo Positioning Stage and Scanner Family Comes in 60 Variations
PI provides the PIHera family of compact X, XY and Z flexure-guided piezo nanopositioning stages, offering record travel ranges to 1.8 millimeters.
PMT module uses USB connection for control & power
Hamamatsu Photonics has extended its range of compact photomultiplier tube modules with the H11890 series of USB powered photon counting modules, providing excellent count linearity with correction performed by an internal processing unit. The H11890 series contain a metal package PMT along with a high-speed photon counting circuit and high-voltage power supply unit.
IR LEDs provide reference source for moisture detection
Hamamatsu Photonics has released an infrared LED, the L12771 series, aimed at moisture detection applications where specific wavelengths are required as the reference light source. The L12771 series has a peak emission wavelength of 1.3µm with a typical radiant output power of 2.8mW. The IR LEDs use InGaAs, and come in a compact TO-46 package.
CCD image sensor suits machine vision applications
Hamamatsu Photonics has introduced the S12379, a linear CCD image sensor designed for machine vision cameras, targeting applications including chip counters and sorting machines. The S12379 offers a linear array of 2048 active pixels in a compact package only 36mm long. Each pixel is square, a necessity for machine vision applications.
Germanium waveguide EAM demonstrated at OFC
At OFC 2015, imec, together with its lab at Ghent University (Intec) and Stanford University, demonstrated a compact germanium waveguide Electro-Absorption Modulator (EAM) with a modulation bandwidth beyond 50GHz. Combining state-of-the-art extinction ratio and low insertion loss with capacitance of just 10fF, the EAM marks an important milestone for the realisation of next-gen silicon integrated optical interconnects at 50Gb/s and beyond.
imec demonstrate hybrid CMOS silicon photonics transceiver
At the the 2015 International Solid State Circuits Conference, imec, in collaboration with the Tyndall National Institute, the University of Leuven (KULeuven) and the Ghent University, demonstrated a 4x20Gb/s Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) hybrid CMOS silicon photonics transceiver.
Photonic ICs support Layer C & Layer T networks
To address the way in which scale and virtualisation drive have changed in network architectures, Infinera as introduced two Photonic ICs (PICs) for optical transport applications. The PICs include the sliceable enhanced ePIC-500 and the application-optimised oPIC-100.
