Chalcogenides could hold the key to brain-like computing
Computers that function like the human brain could soon become a reality thanks to research using optical fibres made ofchalcogenides, sulphur-based, light-sensitive speciality glasses. The research, published inAdvanced Optical Materials, has the potential to allow faster and smarter optical computers capable of learning and evolving.
LASER World of PHOTONICS to discuss laser machining of glass
The LASER World of PHOTONICS is scheduled to take place from 22nd to 25th June 2015, at the Messe München site in Munich, Germany. The show will focus on ‘Laser and Optoelectronics’ in halls B2 and B3, and ‘Lasers and Laser Systems for Production Engineering’ in halls A2 and A3.
Beam profiling camera delivers 6MP at up to 27fps
Designed for applications where high speed, high sensitivity and high resolution are critical, the LT665 beam profiling camera has been released by Ophir Photonics. The camera features a fast USB 3.0 interface that delivers 6MP at up to 27fps. For improved resolution, the device features a 1” format which provides an active area of 4.5µm square pixels (2752x2192 array).
Deuterium light source & PDA added to photonics range
Hamamatsu Photonics has introduced two products to its range, the company's first high brightness deuterium (H2D2) light source (left) featuring a deuterium lamp that emits UV light at intensity 6 times higher than the company's conventional L2D2 range of lamps, and aback illuminated 16 channel PhotoDiode Array (PDA), designed for use in X-ray non-destructive testing applications.
Scientists target mid-IR band frequency comb for spectroscopy
Scientists from Ghent University and imec have joined forces with the Max Planck Institute in Garching to realise a frequency comb light source in the mid-IR wavelength band. These frequency comb light sources with an extended spectrum can be used for real-time, extremely high resolution spectroscopy, for instance, to measure the presence and concentration of gas molecules in analytes.
Power meter measures 120kW lasers
At Photonics West, Ophir Photonics announced the 120K-W Laser Power Meter, which is claimed to be the only commercial sensor for measuring 120kW lasers. The device, which is suitable for heavy-duty applications, such as welding, drilling, cutting and metal forming, measures high power, fibre, infrared and Nd:YAG lasers.
Laser beam profiling camera features SNR of 1000:1
Adding to its Pyrocam family of pyroelectric laser beam profiling cameras, Ophir Photonics announced its Pyrocam IIIHR, at Photonics West. Designed for OEM applications, this camera features a sensitive 160x160 pixel image array that can profile beams up to 12.8mm without the need for reduction optics. The higher resolution, 80µm pixel pitch means it can analyse beams up to 20% smaller.
Beam monitoring system now provides 2D viewing
At Photonics West, Ophir Photonics announced the expansion of its BeamWatch family of industrial laser beam profilers. Designed for material processing applications, the system is claimed to be the industry's first non-contact, focus spot size and position monitor for very high power YAG, fibre and diode lasers. The profilers instantly and accurately measure laser parameters without requiring contact with the laser beam.
CEA-Leti to present silicon successes at OFC 2015
At OFC 2015, which takes place from 22nd to 26th March in Los Angeles, CEA-Leti will present updates on its silicon photonics technology, including its results on ‘Heterogeneously integrated III-V on silicon distributed feedback lasers at 1310nm’ and hybridisation of electronic and photonic ICs.
PI Introduces Air Bearing Stages / Systems
PI has introduced their new air bearing stage and system capabilities at this year's Photonics West conference, to complement their comprehensive range of piezo nano positioning stages and hexapod micro positioning systems.
