From solar and wind to energy storage: Trends and solutions
Despite their varied applications, solar inverters, wind turbine converters and ESS solutions have a lot in common. Each typically operates up to the voltage and current extremes of existing silicon switch technology, and each benefits from the efficiency improvements wide-bandgap SiC switches and diodes are offering.
Induction heating technology in small home appliances
Induction heating brings precise and even heat control to cooking. It offers many benefits over conventional heating elements. Giuseppe de Falco, senior technical marketing engineer, Infineon Technologies, looks at the physics and the electronic technology used in many of our kitchen cooking appliances.
Compact intelligent power device with 600V rating announced
Toshiba Electronics has announced a high voltage intelligent power device intended for driving the motor within equipment such as air conditioners, air cleaners and pumps. With its rated power supply voltage (VBB) of 600V, the TPD4162F can be used for any applications with input signals in the range 200 to 220VAC.
Gate-drivers for power MOSFETs and IGBTs
The monolithic bridge driver ICs feature a high-side floating supply offset voltage of 600V and the logic inputs can be used at 3.3V and 5.0V. They make use of the Under-Voltage Lockout circuit for preventing malfunction when VCC and VBS are lower than the specified threshold voltage. These drivers operate within -40°C to 125°C temperature range.
Compact bias supply with power stage reference design
This reference design is a 4.2W, single-channel, automotive 12V battery input flyback bias supply for IGBT/SiC isolated gate drivers. The supply accepts a wide input range of 4.5V to 65VDC. The output is configurable as +15V,–8V or +20V, –4V at loads up to 180mA for driving the IGBT/SiC MOSFET power modules.
Converter controller simplifies power for smart devices
STMicroelectronics’ VIPer222 controller for high-voltage converters up to eight watts brings small size, low cost, and versatility to applications such as home appliances, building-automation devices, smart lighting, and smart meters.
AI-based soft switching using 200kVA inverter reference
Pre-Switchhas released first test data from its Cleanwave 200kW inverter reference. Double pulse test data demonstrates that the Pre-Switch soft-switching platform - comprising the Pre-Drive3 controller board powered by the Pre-Flex FPGA, and RPG gate driver board - reduces total system switching losses by 90% or more.
New current ratings added to TRENCHSTOP IGBT7 portfolio
Infineon Technologies has added new current ratings to its 1,200V TRENCHSTOP IGBT7 modules. This completes the Easy 1B and 2B portfolio, which is now offering power solutions for up to 11 kW in PIM and up to 22kW in six-pack topologies with the latest chip technology.
MOSFET driver provides fault detection to simplify circuit
Toshiba Electronics has announced a new IGBT/MOSFET gate driver equipped with additional built-in functionality. The new TLP5231 will simplify the design task in a wide range of applications including industrial inverters, Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS), power conditioners for solar energy and motor controls.
