SiC MOSFETs enable higher efficiency & power density
Wolfspeed, a Cree company, has announced that Gruppo PBM is using its MOSFETs in the HF9 battery charger family to enable higher efficiency and power density at a lower overall system cost.
Smart vests have construction workers' safety at heart
Heat stress is a growing safety concern in the building industry and now an innovative smart vest has been developed to monitor the health of construction workers in real time. Developed at RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia, the vest uses sensors to measure a worker's body temperature and heart rate and sends the data wirelessly to a smartphone app, which instantly alerts users to any anomalies.
MOSFET driver offers increased power per channel
A new six-channel silicon carbide MOSFET driver from Wolfspeed is in stock at Richardson RFPD with full design support and capabilities. The CGD15FB45P1 features six output channels, isolated power supply, a direct-mount low inductance design, short circuit protection, and over-temperature and under-voltage protection.
What will life be like in 100 years?
Super skyscrapers which will dwarf the Shard, underwater bubble cities and hyper-flexible living spaces are all likely to be reality in 100 years’ time. That’s the verdict of a new study which paints a vivid picture of our future lives – suggesting the way we live, work and play will change beyond all recognition over the course of the next century.
SICK Powers into Industry 4.0 with the All-seeing PowerProx Sensor
SICK has set a technology milestone in sensing capability for factory automation with the new PowerProx, offering unprecedented versatility to detect any object on a high-speed production line with just one range of sensors.
Plessey to build LEDs in cubic GaN on 3C-SiC/Si substrates
Plessey, Anvil Semiconductors and the University of Cambridge announced that they are working together to fabricate high efficiency LEDs in cubic GaN grown on Anvil's 3C-SiC / Si substrates. Cubic GaN has the potential to overcome the problems caused in conventional LEDs by the strong internal electric fields which impair carrier recombination and contribute to efficiency droop.
A wave of products on show at APEC 2016
Vishay Intertechnology will be highlighting its latest power MOSFET, IC, passive component and diode technologies for a wide range of applications at APEC 2016 – the Applied Power Electronics Conference taking place in California in March.
Increasing power device performance
When talking about Wide Band Gap (WBG) materials for power electronics applications, it’s usually GaN or SiC that spring to mind. This is a not a surprise - indeed SiC and GaN are currently the most advanced WBG technologies for power electronics applications.
Nuclear radiation may be used to combat Zika virus
The United Nations' top nuclear watchdog group proposed the use of nuclear radiation treatment as a strategy to eliminate or reduce the mosquito population carrying the Zika virus. Yukiya Amano, Director of the International Atomic Energy Agency, announced this plan on last Sunday, before leaving for an official visit to Central America where the virus has been rapidly spreading.
Floating forest to be planted in Rotterdam
When the art collective Mothership wanted to add more green space to the Dutch city of Rotterdam, it looked to the ocean. In March, Mothership will plant 20 trees that will bob in recycled buoys in the city harbor. They will collectively make a small floating forest in Rotterdam's historic Rijnhaven, which will host a number of other floating architecture projects until 2018.
