Facial recognition at airport customs in Japan

It has been announced that NEC Corporation has received an order from Japan Customs for an electronic customs procedure gate featuring facial recognition for use at the customs inspection area at Japan's busiest international airport. Demonstration trials of the electronic customs procedure gate are scheduled to begin at Terminal 3 of Narita International Airport from April 2019.

Broadband availability expanded in Sweden

Broadband availability in Mossberg, Sweden, has been successfully expanded by NEC Corporation and NEC Scandinavia, through the installation of the iPASOLINK EX-Advanced for Alingsas Energi. This is reportedly the first time that a 10Gbps ultra-high speed wireless point-to-point link with a millimetre wave frequency band of 80GHz has been deployed in Sweden.

South Atlantic Cable System ready for service

It has been announced by Angola Cables S.A. and NEC Corporation, that the construction of the world's first submarine cable system across the South Atlantic has been completed and is now ready for commercial service. The South Atlantic Cable System (SACS) will connect Angola and Brazil, directly linking the African continent to Latin America across the South Atlantic for the first time.

Plans to manage UK grid stability underway

It has been announced by NEC Corporation that its subsidiary NEC Energy Solutions (NEC ES), is supplying OErsted UK with a 20MW, GSS Grid Storage Solution. Once completed and operational by the end of 2018, the system will be used to provide services to the UK's National Grid to help manage grid stability during changes between peak and low power demand.

NEC brings AI to submarine cable networks

NEC Corporation has announced successful transmission tests that took place over a commercial subsea cable measuring more than 10,000 kilometers using AI and probabilistic shaping at a modulation of 64QAM. NEC, in a joint research publication with Google, has demonstrated for the first time that the FASTER open subsea cable can be upgraded to a spectral efficiency of 6 bits per second per hertz (b/s/Hz) in an 11,000km segment.

Submarine cable links the Republic of Palau

The construction of a new submarine cable linking the Republic of Palau has been completed by Belau Submarine Cable and NEC. It is now ready for commercial service. The Palau Spur interconnects with the existing SEA-US submarine cable (which connects the Philippines and Indonesia to the west coast of the United States via Guam and Hawaii) from a branching unit located between the Philippines and Guam.

NEC enables ink dots to become identification tags

NEC has announced the development of a "micro-sized Identifier Dot on Things" (mIDoT) technology that enables single dots written with off-the-shelf glitter ink pens to become distinctive identification tags. mIDoT analyses camera images with a specialised algorithm to quickly and accurately recognise tiny patterns in the ink of individual dots, which are difficult to duplicate or identify with the naked eye.
