At embedded world 2022, on the Digikey booth, Paige West speaks with Thomas Ernst from ADI Trinamic about motor and motion control, a new product launch and the technical support offered to customers.

Trinamic has been focusing on motor and motion control for roughly 20 years. Since 2020 the company has bee a part of Maxim Integrated and since 2021, a part of the big Analog Devices family.

There’s a lot going on in the motor and motion control area and Trinamic is in the middle of it. We hear requirements for really dynamic but still seamless motion and most of all we see a growing requirement for energy efficiency.

There a many different aspects fuelling this demand, one being the growing number of battery-powered applications and the trend of miniaturisation.

Ernst said: “On our journey we really learnt to make products that make a difference.” One key concept is to embed very strong digital features very close to the analogue part of the driver. This means the motor becomes almost like a sensor – increasing reliability and efficiency.

New product

ADI Trinamic also launched a new product, coming soon to Digikey, which is the TMC2240 – a smart high-performance stepper motor driver IC.

The TMC2240 is a smart high-performance stepper motor driver IC with serial communication interfaces (SPI, UART) and extensive diagnosis capabilities. It combines industries’ most advanced stepper motor driver based on the 256-usteps built-in indexer and two fully integrated 36V, 3.0AMAX H-Bridges plus non-dissipative Integrated Current Sensing (ICS).

TMC2240 features abundant diagnostics and protections such as short protection / OCP, thermal shutdown, under voltage lockout. During thermal shutdown and under voltage lockout events the driver is disabled. Furthermore, TMC2240 provides functions to measure the driver temperature, estimate the motor temperature, and measure one external analog input.
