Cadence licenses MPEG AAC codecs from Fraunhofer IIS
Licensing the full suite of MPEG AAC codecs from Fraunhofer IIS for use with the Tensilica HiFi DSP, Cadence Design Systems plans to use the products to enhance the library of over 100 audio/voice software packages optimised for the HiFi DSP family. New standards include the AAC-ELD communication codec, which enables telephone conversations with the highest possible audio quality, and xHE-AAC, which is the latest upgrade to the MPEG AAC family of...
Connecting electric vehicles to the power grid
Engineers at Fraunhofer ESK have specified and implemented the required communication interface as part of the EU-sponsored smart vehicle-to-grid interface (SMARTV2G) project. This project aims to create a system in which electric vehicles use and temporarily store energy. By temporarily storing the energy, it can be fed back into the grid as needed.
ALD equipment users in next generation 3D capacitors
SiSTEM Technology says that the Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) equipment it supplies from Picosun is being used in the fast, cost-efficient mass production of next generation 3D capacitors, as part of an EU development programme. These devices will be suitable for use, for example, in pacemakers and other implantable medical devices, electric cars, and highly efficient memories for computers and mobile devices.
IC prototyping service scheduled for 2014
Known as Multi-Project Wafer (MPW) or shuttle run, ams has updated the schedule of the IC prototyping service for 2014. Combining several designs from different customers onto a single wafer, the prototyping service offers significant cost advantages for foundry customers as the costs for wafers and masks are shared among a number of different shuttle participants.

Rapid Correction of Errors in Automobiles Thanks to DIANA Research Project
From 2015 onwards, the time that automobiles will need to spend in the repair shop could be significantly decreased. This will be possible thanks to joint research work undertaken by AUDI, Continental, Infineon Technologies and ZMDI. In the DIANA project, the companies have focused their research on ways of improving the analytical and diagnostic ability in electronic control units (ECUs) in vehicles. In three years of research under Infineon&rsq...
