Automotive LED lighting revolutionises road safety
A German research alliance has developed the basis for smart, high resolution LED headlights which take adaptive forward lighting to a new dimension. The demonstration model was developed by overall project manager Osram in collaboration with the project partners Daimler, Fraunhofer, Hella and Infineon.
TULIPP targets high-performance embedded systems
The TULIPP (Towards Ubiquitous Low-power Image Processing Platforms) project, initiative targeting the development of high performance, energy-efficient embedded systems for the growing range of increasingly complex image processing applications, has been announced. The TULIPP project is being funded with nearly €4 million from Horizon 2020, the European Union’s biggest research and innovation programme to date.
Taking the momentum out of vibrations
Components of ships are sent grey with stress, all due to diesel engines vibrating. However adaptronic systems can effectively reduce these vibrations. At the maritime trade fair SMM, Fraunhofer researchers are presenting a simulation tool that allows these systems to be developed efficiently: The ‘Mechanical Simulation Toolbox’ is now available on the market and easy to use.
Sivers IMA finalises 10 Gbps EU project
Sivers IMA AB has participated in the ICT project E3Network supported by the European Union through the FP7 program and contributed with mm‐wave knowhow and state of the art transceivers for mm‐wave backhaul. This project was initiated in December 2012 and finalised with good results in May 2016. A final review was held in Brussels mid‐September 2016. Within the E3network project, a prototype of a very high‐speed (10 Gbps) E‐band point...
MPEG-H Audio Decoder for Tensilica HiFi DSPs
Cadence Design Systems announced immediate availability of the next-generation MPEG-H Audio decoder based on Cadence Tensilica HiFi DSPs. MPEG-H Audio is a future broadcast standard and is expected to be one of the key audio technologies adopted worldwide for TVs. Through close collaboration with Fraunhofer, one of the developers of the open ISO MPEG-H Audio standard, Cadence is first to market with an implementation for a licensable DSP.
First ever simultaneous wavelength conversion technology
Fujitsu Laboratories and the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute HHI have announced the development of a new method to simultaneously convert the wavelengths of wavelength-division-multiplexed signals necessary for optical communication relay nodes in future wavelength-division-multiplexed optical networks, and have successfully tested the method using high bandwidth signal transmission in the range of 1Tbps.

EuMW 2016: Vector network analysis suits all applications
The very latest in Vector Network Analysis (VNA) technology and innovation will be showcased by Anritsu (Stand 8) at European Microwave Week, offering a VNA to suit every application, from RF to Broadband, and for every budget and measurement scenario. During the show, Anritsu will display up-coming and new additions to the ShockLine and VectorStar product families, and demonstrating some of the latest developments in test and measurement.
Startup makes residential solar panels twice as efficient
With a 36% yield, the solar panels developed by startup Insolight could deliver up to twice as much energy as traditional panels. The company came up with a thin structure that directs the sun’s rays to the small surface area of very high performance solar cells. The result is a highly efficient flat photovoltaic system.
