Fraunhofer completes offshore pumped storage concept test
The Fraunhofer Institute for Wind Energy and Energy System Technology said it has completed a four-week test of its Stored Energy in the Sea (StEnSEA) concept. Fraunhofer said it recovered its three-meter diameter hollow sphere from the bottom of Lake Constance on the Swiss-German border, where it had been operating at a depth of about 100 meters. The technology uses water pressure to drive electromechanical pump components within a central tube ...

Perovskite PV modules achieve 12.4% power conversion efficiency
Imec and partner Solliance have announced that they have improved their 4x4cm2 perovskite module, achieving a certified conversion efficiency of 12.4%, which it claims to be amongst the highest for this size of perovskite modules. The module efficiency was measured under long-term Maximum Power Point (MPP) tracking. At Solliance, this perovskite technology is developed with industrially-applicable processes and with a view towards a rapid market i...
EU and South Korean project to deliver 5G system prototype
Research institute of CEA Tech, Leti, has announced a European and South Korean project, 5G CHAMPION, to deliver what it claims to be the world’s first fully integrated and operational 5G prototype in conjunction with the 2018 Winter Olympics. The team of eight European and 13 Korean partners will develop a new architecture that provides an efficient end-to-end system performance encompassing cutting-edge 5G radio-access, core-network and sa...

Their aim is to inspire the international trade visitors with innovative products and informing about current industry trends.
Flexible manufacturing on the road to production runs of one
At the moment manufacturing is set to a fixed series of separate stages, so if machines or equipment for some reason fail – production stops. This will cost time and money, but the researchers at Fraunhofer are now offering a better way with a digital twin.Machines today produce parts in networked, pre-programmed production runs: pieces are turned, milled and measured in a set order.
A robotic ‘golden ticket’ for UK companies
A European-wide initiative has been launched to enhance robotic technology and several UK businesses have secured one of 25 available ‘golden tickets’ to get involved.Automata Technologies, Hexagon Metrology, Nissan Motor Manufacturing (UK) and Russell Finex are the latest UK beneficiaries from the second and final round of the ROBOTT-NET Voucher Programme, which saw the in-demand vouchers handed out.
Analysis procedure for biogas substrates is developed
The biological department of biogas specialist WELTEC BIOPOWER in Vechta, Germany, is developing a quick test for identifying inhibitors in biogas substrates together with its partners. Input mass may contain substances that prevent efficient biogas production. For example, a small amount of mould is sufficient to cause such an adverse effect in silage. Ammonium, copper, zinc, drugs and disinfectants are often identified as inhibitors in slurry a...
AR: the factory of the future and the workbench 2.0
These days, AR is an indispensable part of the process of digitalisation for companies and researchers alike. Visualising objects in virtual form saves costs, time and effort. This is because AR enables the precise visual and spatial visualisation of invisible characteristics and projects directly in their actual environment. Companies and research facilities in Saxony-Anhalt are working both on and with AR solutions.
