Riding on the back of millimetre waves
Of all the wavelengths in the spectrum used for wireless data transmission, perhaps the least well known is the millimetre wave band. However, it is precisely this band (and the continuous bandwidth it provides) that enables wireless data transmission at speeds and bandwidth that compare to the high quality of fibre optic communication systems.
E-Band MMC power detector operates over 71 to 86GHz frequency range
Hittite Microwave’s new E-Band MMIC power detector is targeted at communications systems, test equipment, sensors and general purpose RF detection over the 71 to 86GHz frequency range. The HMC7447 power detector provides a linear output voltage over a -0.5 to +23.5dBm input power range with low insertion loss of 0.45 dB and typical input return loss of only 19.5 dB.
CST University Publication Award winners announced
Winners of an annual grant given to university institutes and researchers for published papers related to 3D electromagnetic field simulation applications, the CST University Publication Award 2013 have been announced by Computer Simulation Technology. Highlighting CST's support in furthering research and innovation within universities, 2013 marks the 10th anniversary of the Award.
Quick and accurate design of RF base station filters
Prism Microwave uses AWR's Microwave Office circuit design software for its cavity filter tuning and optimization, as well as the design of active RF electronics and planar components on printed circuit boards, including low noise amplifiers, drivers, power amplifiers, dividers, hybrids, attenuators, oscillators, and planar/discrete filters.
Microwave signal generators balance price/performance
Agilent Technologies has expanded its range of signal generators with two new models the N5183B MXG and N5173B EXG that complement Agilent’s flagship E8267D vector PSG and E8257D analogue PSG. The N5183B MXG analogue is an alternative to the high-performance PSG. It offers accuracy, efficiency and near-PSG performance in just two rack units
Seven new gain horn antenna designs ranging from 1.7 GHz up to 40 GHz
The standard gain horn antenna lines from Fairview Microwave have been expanded to include seven new designs. Ranging in size from WR28 to WR430 and frequencies from 1.7 GHz up to 40 GHz, the new designs aim to provide engineers with a complete and comprehensive selection of components for various calibration and testing applications.
15GHz point to point GaN PA MMIC
Plextek release a video tutorial on the design of GaN power amplifier monolithic microwave integrated circuits for use in 15GHz point to point microwave links, using Agilent's ADS software, and Cree's 0.25um GaN on SiC process. Emphasis is on designing GaN PAs for high linearity, rather than just saturated power. The resulting MMIC layout is somewhat smaller than commercially available GaAs die offering comparable performance.
Gallium Nitride MMIC PA for 6 to 18 GHz applications
Hittite Microwave is offering a significant boost in performance, size and durability with a new Gallium Nitride MMIC power amplifier. Ideal for communications, test instrumentation and radar systems operating in the 6 to 18 GHz frequency range, the HMC7149 10W GaN MMIC Power Amplifier offers high output power capability.
Coaxial termination quick release flange is a time saver
The new AMCOL-2-7/8 coaxial termination from Link Microtek has been designed to safely absorb high-power microwave and RF signals in a wide variety of operational systems and test-and-measurement applications. The device was developed at Link’s Basingstoke facility. The new device operates over a specified frequency range of DC to 3.1GHz, with a power handling capability of up to 50W and a maximum return loss of 27dB.
Addressing test amplifier distortion
Following publication of the third addition, test engineers may need to review their choice of amplifier, in order to continue to comply with the new IEC 61000-4-3. By John Dearing, product manager for the Teseq range of RF broadband power amplifiers and Compliance 3 test software.
