Current limiters protect factory automation circuits
Setting new standards for circuit protection in factory automation, STMicroelectronics has introduced two high-speed digital-input current limiters. The SCLT3-8BQ7 and CLT01-38SQ7 offer fast, robust protection against unwanted input-signal current spikes while reducing power consumption, board space and component costs in industrial PLCs - the 'brains' of smart factories and industrial robots.
STMicroelectronics accelerates STM8 sales past 2bn units
STMicroelectronics has surpassed 2bn unit sales of its robust and versatile STM8 MCUs, less than two years after reaching 1bn unit sales, noting particularly strong success in China. Aided by these accelerating STM8 sales, ST’s share of the general-purpose MCU market has grown to 12.7% in 2015 from 8.2% in 2013, according to World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS).
Ultrasound diagnostic device improves care in remote rural areas
MU and STMicroelectronics have announced that MU’s US-304 portable ultrasound imager, powered by ST’s STHV800pulser, is aiming to increase the quality of point-of-care medical diagnostics in remote rural areas of Africa. MU’s device has been developed for the 'Doctor Car' mobile-clinic project to provide medical care in remote rural areas of Africa.
The centre of embedded designs
Microcontrollers, processors and SoCs are at the heart of the majority of modern embedded systems, including connected sensor nodes at the edges of the internet of things (IoT). Sally Ward-Foxton explains. At this year’s Embedded World show in Nuremberg, Germany, some of the biggest product launches were in the realm of microcontrollers.
Wireless IoT connectivity: making sense of the protocols
Organisations designing devices and systems for the Internet of Things (IoT) today have many choices over the wireless protocols they will use to facilitate communication with the cloud. Simon Duggleby, Product Marketing Manager, Electronics Division, RS Components explains.
TI leads industrial semiconductor vendor share ranking in 2015
According to the latest analysis by Semicast Research, Texas Instruments was the leading vendor of semiconductors to the industrial sector in 2015, ahead of Infineon Technologies. Intel passed STMicroelectronics to become the third largest vendor following the acquisition of Altera, with Renesas Electronics completing the top five.
Detecting human activity on mobile and wearable devices
To aid the development of motion sensing applications, STMicroelectronics has introduced three additions to its Open.MEMS portfolio of free and software libraries.
36V op amps raise ruggedness in automotive & industrial applications
STMicroelectronics has introduced two 36V op amps that deliver enhanced performance and ruggedness in automotive and industrial applications. The op amps feature a wide supply-voltage range, stability in challenging operating conditions, and tolerance of electrostatic discharge (ESD) up to 4kV (HBM).
