Back to the reference - Self tying shoes
Nike was asked to collaborate on a movie 30 years ago that would feature scenes set in a futuristic world of 2015. That film was Back to the Future. In the film, Nike had self tying shoes that would suit the inhabitants of the future (21st October 2015 was the distant future in 1989). On this date (known as Back to the Future day), two days ago, the world went a little bit crazy. The internet was abuzz with Back to the Future references and pictures.
Nike even introduced an pair of shoes in celebration of the day.
With the help of Michael J. Fox, Marty McFly (the main character) in the film, Nike introduced the first pair of self tying shoes. The shoes combined archetype invention with digital technology, giving a result of an individually responsive system that senses a wearer's motion to provide adaptive on-demand comfort and support.
“We started creating something for fiction and we turned it into fact, inventing a new technology that will benefit all athletes,” said Mark Parker, President and Chief Executive Officer, Nike.
In partnership with The Michael J. Fox Foundation, more pairs will be created and auctioned off next year in support of the foundation. You can find out more and donate at https://www.michaeljfox.org/.
