Keep on trucking with zero carbon hydrogen fuel

Hydrogen fuel pioneer, ULEMCo will hit the roads later this year with a converted VOLVO FH16 vehicle that uses a combustion engine powered entirely by zero carbon hydrogen fuel.

Designed to demonstrate how hydrogen fuel can decarbonise heavy goods vehicles in a cost effective and efficient way, the Mega Low Emissions (MLE) will be achieved without the use of fuel cells and an electric motor.

The company claims that unlike normal combustion engines, there will be none of the usual emissions from hydrocarbons such as unburnt fuel, particulates and carbon monoxide.

The company aims to show that zero carbon emissions can be reached in a shorter time frame when using conventional engines and existing truck designs, as opposed to the complete transformation required for electrification.

“We are hugely excited about the potential for hydrogen fuel as a route to faster achievement of zero carbon emission in commercial vehicles,” said Amanda Lyne, CEO of ULEMCo.

“With this MLE demonstrator, co-funded by the UK’s innovation agency, Innovate UK, we are showing that 100% hydrogen fuel in combustion engines is a practical and cost effective option. It sits well alongside the hydrogen dual-fuel conversions that we have already implemented commercially.”
