A development platform for UHF RFID battery-free devices which includes an ANDY100 chip with EPC C1G2 communication and a MSPG2233IPW20 MCU from Texas Instruments for communication with developers’ circuits, the Medusa has been introduced by Farsens.

Without requiring batteries on the tag, the Medusa allows users to develop their own wireless sensors or actuators using energy harvested from the RF field created by the RFID reader to power up the ANDY100 IC, the MCU and the circuitry and devices attached to it.

The ANDY100 operates under standard EPC C1G2 commands so that proprietary or custom commands are not needed. Any commercial UHF RFID reader can be used just by programming with the correct standard commands.

With a 2W ERP setup, the Medusa can communicate to over 1.5m (5ft). The actual distance will depend on the firmware downloaded to the MCU and the activities it performs. The development platform also comes with a 50Ω SMA connector for external antennas to make testing easier for developers.
