Electrolyte capacitors go up in value
AVX has improved maximum cap values of its low profile NOJ series range of OxiCap Niobium Oxide solid electrolyte capacitors. The standard Y case (7.3 x 4.3 x 2mm; length x width x height) now features 150uF rated at 6.3V, with the W case size (6 x 3.2 x 1.5mm; l x w x h) benefiting from 100uF rated at 4V. Low profile NOJ series capacitors are designed for applications where maximum height of components above or below the PCB are of prime consideration, for example PC notebooks, mobile phones, PDAs and other thin handheld devices.
The key benefit of AVX’s OxiCap Niobium Oxide (NbO) technology is safety. NbO capacitors would fail up to category voltage with high resistance only (not short circuit) and thus will not cause smoking or burning effect of the end device. Electrical characteristics are the same or better than tantalum devices. More, NbO, unlike Tantalum, is readily available and powder can be prepared by an easier process, yet devices can be manufactured on existing standard tantalum processing lines. OxiCap™ devices are also lead-free and halogen-free.
Low profile OxiCap™ NOJ series capacitors are available from 1.8 to 10V in case sizes down to 0805. The devices offer reliability ratings of 0.5% per1000 hours and 200,000 hours MTBF that is two times better compared to conventional tantalum capacitors and hundred times better compared to conventional wet aluminium electrolytic capacitors. Leakage current is 0.02CV, and operating temperature range is -55 up to +105 degrees Celsius.
