Fieldbus Applications With Optocouplers White Paper From Avago

Fieldbus (or field bus) is the name of a family of industrial computer network protocols used for real-time distributed control. It is a way to connect instruments in a manufacturing plant. By Vincent CHING and FOO Chwan Jye of Avago Technologies.
A typical complex automated industrial system — such as a manufacturing assembly line — usually needs an organized hierarchy of controller systems to function. In this hierarchy there is usually a Human Machine Interface at the top, where an operator can monitor or operate the system. This is typically linked to a middle layer of programmable logic controllers by a non-time-critical communications system such as Ethernet. At the bottom of the control hierarchy is the fieldbus that links the PLCs to the components that do the assembly line work, such as sensors, actuators, electric motors, console lights, switches, valves and contactors.

Where And Why Optocouplers Are Used In Industrial Systems

In an industrial environment, high voltages, magnetic fields and noise are commonly present. In addition high reliability is critical to avoid production downtime and ensure data transmission accuracy. In such an environment circuit designers use optocouplers to insulate high voltages and isolate unwanted noise signals, thus increasing system robustness and reliability.
