Integrating Sphere Enables Precise Measurements for Large LED Modules
The rising popularity of LED light sources is making it more important for manufacturers, system integrators, illumination designers and scientific laboratories to carry out complex measurements for LED lamps, whereby the measuring equipment used must also accommodate LED modules and engines of increasing physical dimensions. GL Optic has responded to this need by developing the GLS 1100 integrating sphere.
The The energy consumption of the light source is derived from the measured values for luminous flux and radiant power. This, then, forms the basis for calculating the extent by which the electronic components, drivers and power supplies influence the spectral characteristics of the LEDs. The influence exerted by dimmers and cooling equipment can also be determined in this manner as can that of optical components such as lenses, reflectors and diffusers that are fitted together with the LEDs. The integrating sphere offers sufficient space for accommodating entire lamps and quantifying the spectral power of the overall product. The GLS 1100 can be used for all lamps, such as those found in street, emergency and vehicle lights as well as medical lighting equipment, and the product is particularly well suited to taking measurements for lamps comprising several LEDs.
GL Optic also supplies matching SpectroSoft software to ascertain these basic parameters and automatically determine many additional photometric variables such as the tristimulus value, chromaticity coordinates, color temperature, dominant wavelength, spectral purity (in percent), peak wavelength (in nm) and full width at half maximum of spectral lines.
Made from lightweight composite materials, the integrating sphere is easy to install and can be conveniently adapted to take measurements for different lamp types. Included in the configuration is an auxiliary light source to compensate for self-absorption and an adjustable sample holder. The GLS 1100 provides for extremely reliable measurement results and is precisely calibrated for LED measurements in accordance with CIE 127:2007.
