Avago Ships Industry’s Fastest Intelligent Power Module Interface Optocouplers for Industrial and White Goods Applications

Avago Technologies has announced three high-speed optocouplers that deliver robust electrical signal isolation for Intelligent Power Module interface applications. The new ACPL-x484 optocouplers operate at 10 MBd, doubling the speed of existing IPM optocouplers for more efficient performance. Available in three different compact packages that reduce PCB board space, the devices address IPM interfaces in AC and brushless DC motor drives, industrial inverters, air conditioners, renewable energy inverters, sewing machines and switching power supplies, as well as gate drive applications and general digital isolation.

With high common-mode rejection (CMR) of 30 kV/μs, the ACPL-x484 optocouplers prevent erroneous driving of an IPM and provide reliable operation in noisy environments. The devices offer fast switching with short propagation delays of 100 ns, resulting in reduced dead time, as well as improved efficiency and precision of motion. The optocouplers feature a wide supply voltage range from 4.5V to 30V, which ensures an IPM is driven to the optimum intended level and thus lowers system power budget.

“These new optocouplers demonstrate our ability to bring value to customers by pushing the speed limits of IPM and gate drive interface performance,” said Kheng-Jam Lee, marketing director for optocoupler products at Avago. “The devices’ robust noise rejection, flexible supply voltage range and multiple compact packages extend our market-leading optocoupler portfolio to better address a wider range of industrial and white goods applications.”

The ACPL-M484 and ACPL-P484 optocouplers offer input-output withstand voltage of 3,750 Vrms and the ACPL-W484 device offers 5,000 Vrms, each for 1 minute for UL 1577-compliance. The devices meet IEC/EN/DIN EN 60747-5-2 approval with working voltage (Viorm) of 560 Vpeak for ACPL-M484, 891 Vpeak for ACPL-P484 and 1140 Vpeak for ACPL-W484. They are also CSA approved. The ACPL-M484 device is available in an SO-5 package with both clearance and creepage of 5 mm. The ACPL-P484 device is available in a stretched SO-6 package with clearance and creepage of 7 mm and 8 mm, respectively. The ACPL-W484 device is available in a stretched SO-6 package with clearance and creepage of 8 mm.
