Cat M1 LTE module allows more devices to connect to the IoT
Facilitating a larger number of devices to connect to the IoT, u-blox has announced plans to launch modules supporting Cat M1 (Category M1) LTE networks. The first SARA-R4 module developed by u-blox will be available in Q4 2016 targeting mobile network operators in the US market. With the recently launched SARA-N2, the world’s first cellular NB-IoT module, the LTE Cat M1 complements u-blox’s extensive product offering for the IoT.
Measuring exposure to pollution through your phone
What’s the best way to measure human exposure to urban pollution? Typically, cities do so by studying air-quality levels in fixed places. New York City, for example, has an extensive monitoring network that measures air quality in 155 locations. But now a study led by MIT researchers, focused on New York City, suggests that using mobile-phone data to track people’s movement provides an even deeper picture of exposure to pollution...
The world’s first smart home IoT protection system
Creators of the world’s first, easy-to-use encryption device, Keezel, has launched The Keezel Home Connect to protect smart homes and IoT devices. The Keezel Home Connect safeguards the entire home network and connected devices by creating a separate, private network for smart devices for better security and protection against hackers.
IoT technology lowers business costs and improves performance
This autumn, Sierra Wireless and AT&T will pilot next gen LTE-M network technologies. The pilot will spur LTE network connections for IoT devices. The Sierra Wireless LTE-M module will support the AT&T pilot with several technology leaders in the San Francisco Bay Area in November. LTE-M technology works specifically with IoT devices, such as smart meters, mHealth and wearables. AT&T plans to make the technology commercially...
2.4GHz ZigBee modules shorten time to market
The Telegesis ETRX35x ZigBee modules from Silicon Labs are now in stock at Mouser Electronics. Based on the Silicon Labs ZigBee-compliant platform of EM358x systems on chips (SoCs) and the ZigBee PRO-compliant EmberZNet stack, the ETRX35x modules are small, low-power 2.4 GHz modules designed to be easily integrated into devices.
Dot: The future of smartphone notifications
A group of UC Berkeley engineers and entrepreneurs have formed IoTa Labs and launched their physical push notification 'dot' on Kickstarter, and it has already crushed its $20,000 goal. Dot uses precise location tracking to make your smartphone's notifications 'highly contextual'.
RF ICs reduce external part count
The ATA8520 transmitter and ATA8520D transceiver ICs from Atmel for operation in the 868 MHz SIGFOX network are available fromdistributor Mouser Electronics.Targeting European LPWAN and Internet of Things (IoT) applications, the devices incorporate a radio frequency (RF) front end, a digital baseband and a low-power 8-bit AVR microcontrollerin a single chip.
Lighting and the IoT go hand-in hand into a connected future
Lighting specialist Tridonic celebrated its 50th birthday earlier this year at the company’s National Partner Conference, and a key part of the celebrations was to highlight what Tridonic believe will be the most exciting advancement in connected lighting seen in the industry.
IoT modules combine Bluetooth v4.0 and LoRa support
What are claimed to be the first IoT (Internet of Things) modules to combine Bluetooth v4.0 and LoRa support in a single device, the Laird RM1 series are available at Alpha Micro Components. Enabling low energy connectivity over distances of many miles, these modules save money and time while enhancing safety and slashing downtime.
Solid state relays enable self-powered control in the IoT
Expanding the company’s Neo-Iso product platform, Semtech has announced the production release of the TS13102 and TS13103 solid state relays. These enhanced solid state relays enable self-powered control systems in IoT applications, such as smart thermostats, alarm panels, factory automation systems, smart controls and more.
