New IoT technology trialled first in Europe
The new Internet of Things (IoT) technology LTE-M (also known as LTE Cat-M1) has successfully been trialled by KPN, the first European operator. LTE-M (Machine Type Communication) is a new technology that can be rolled out on the existing 4G network. The LTE-M technology is complementary to the recently introduced LoRa network of KPN as well as to existing Machine-to-Machine (M2M) uses cases on 4G.
Partnership standardises intelligent IoT building solutions
The EnOcean Alliance has expanded and strengthened its programme in building automation and the Internet of Things with IBM supporting the EnOcean Alliance as a Promoter Member. The EnOcean Alliance is a consortium of more than 400 companies which standardise and develop intelligent building solutions integrating energy harvesting wireless technology.
What is really needed to secure the Internet of Things?
The Internet of Things (IoT) has become a ubiquitous term to describe the tens of billions of devices that have sensing or actuation capabilities, and are connected to each other via the internet. The IoT includes everything from wearable fitness bands and smart home appliances to factory control devices, medical devices and even automobiles.
Security in the era of cognitive IoT
The connectivity of things such as thermostats, medical devices, automobiles and industrial equipment presents an exciting environment for innovation and new business opportunities. As we rely on connected devices to make our lives better and easier, security must be considered from every aspect.
IoT will demand a step-change in search solutions
A recent article published in IEEE Intelligent Systems highlights the requirements the IoT will place on search engines and brings together the latest research being carried out in this field. 'On Searching the IoT: Requirements and Challenges' has been written by leading researchers working in the field of next-gen communications at the University of Surrey's Institute of Communication Systems (home of the 5G Innovation Centre) and Ohi...
Databus vs. database – knowledge for IIoT developers
The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) is full of confusing terms. That’s unavoidable; despite its reuse of familiar concepts in computing and systems, the IIoT is a fundamental change in the way things work. Fundamental changes require fundamentally new concepts. One of the most important is the concept of a 'databus'. Author: Stan Schneider, CEO, Real-Time Innovations (RTI)
Infineon teams up with Chinese manufacturers for smart home solutions
In the so-called IoT, unauthorised access has to be prevented. Together with partners, Infineon Technologies AG founded the "Open Laboratory for Smart Home Interconnection Security" in Beijing. Infineon is the only non-Chinese company among the founding members which include Midea, Huawei Consumer BG, Tencent and CESI, the China Electronics Standardisation Institute supervised by the Ministry of industry and information technology.
'The Great IoT Bake Off'
In order to prevent IoT cyber crime, Pavan Singh, Vice President and Business Head, Covata believes there is a need for 'baked-in' security. In the rush to bring products to market, some manufacturers give little thought to protecting the product from hackers. Cyber security is not even on the radar of many manufacturers.
Launch of IoT consulting solutions for developers
An array of services, industry offerings and capabilities have been announced by IBM to help enterprise clients, startups and developers drive digital transformation with the Internet of Things (IoT). With the number of connected devices skyrocketing, IBM is making IoT accessible to millions around the world.
Wireless modules offer a range up to 300 metres
The MRF24WN0MA and MRF24WN0MB wireless modules from Microchip are now in stock at Mouser Electronics . The low-power, 2.4GHz, IEEE 802.11b/g/n-compliant transceiver modules interface with Microchip PIC32 microcontrollers and are supported by Microchip’s MPLAB Harmony integrated software framework with a TCP/IP stack. Both network-enabled modules can be quickly developed into almost any design, including Internet of Things (IoT) application...
