RF switch eliminates the need for multiple tuner ICs
Targeted at designers of digital TV tuner modules, cable TV signal switching and distribution systems, multi-tuner digital video recorders, and set-top boxes, Peregrine Semiconductor has introduced the UltraCMOS PE42721 75Ω RF switch. Providing isolation of 68dB at 1GHz, the single-pole double-throw switch suits geographic markets such as China, Japan, Korea and Latin America.
In these markets broadband-TV devices must accommodate multiple RF inputs for cable, satellite and terrestrial reception while avoiding interference between these signals. With this high isolation, only this one tuner chip is needed in each device. This reduces the overall tuner footprint and cost of the system.
Combining the high isolation with low insertion loss of 0.52dB at 1GHz, Peregrine’s switch also delivers best-in-class linearity and electrostatic-discharge performance and improves the signal fidelity by reducing the signal-to-noise ratio. The PE42721 RF SPDT switch also features video feedthrough of 4 mVpp for reduced distortion, and high linearity (CTB of -99dBc and CSO greater than -105dBc) to improve dynamic range of TV systems. Offering a power supply range from 2.3-5.5V, the PE42721 is also +1.8 and +3.3V control logic compatible. In addition, no blocking capacitors are required if DC voltage is not present on the RF ports.

Supplied in an RoHS compliant, 3x3mm 12-lead QFN package, the PE42721 is available now for smapling and volume-production. The RF switch is priced at $0.45 (USD) each in 10,000 unit quantities, while the evaluation kit boards are $95 (USD).
