Expanding the company's USB offering, FTDI Chip has introduced a single chip bridging solution offering I2C and multi-channel SPI interface capabilities. The FT4222H serves as a SPI Master/Slave interface controller supporting 0, 1, 2 and 3 SPI modes and as a configurable I2C Master/Slave interface controller which conforms with I2C v2.1 and v3.0 specifications.

In SPI mode, the device allows single, dual and quad data width transfer for total data rates of up to 27Mb/s. In I2C mode, it supports operation in 100kb/s standard mode, 400kb/s fast mode, 1Mb/s fast mode plus and 3.4Mb/s high speed mode. Via the USB bus, software applications can control the configurable general purpose IOs. Operating over a temperature range from -40 to +85°C, this device is suitable for use in demanding industrial environments.

Compliant with the USB 2.0 hi-speed standard, the FT4222H deals with the USB protocol, so as to not waste valuable resources on the system microcontroller - which could lead to performance compromises. The USB 2.0 interface draws very little current, typically consuming just 75mA when active and 375µA in suspend mode. Offering more rapid charging, the battery charger detection function offers the ability to detect connection with a dedicated charging port.

Integrated OTP memory is provided, which enables the storage of USB vendor ID, product ID, device serial number, product description string information and other items of vendor specific data. FTDI can also provide royalty-free USB drivers for the Windows operating system, often eliminating the need for engineers to develop their own.

Satyajit Sarma, USB Product Manager, FTDI Chip, comments: “FTDI Chip’s track record in the USB arena is second to none. The addition of a quad SPI bridging chip to our portfolio is highly advantageous and we expect it to see strong uptake. It results in there being more data lines made available to engineers so that larger quantities of data can thus be transferred using fewer clock cycles."

Supplied in a Pb-free 32-pin QFN package, the FT4222H is available now priced at £1.54 each in 1,000 unit quantities.
