PTH IDC connector targets smart grid applications
AVX has added a single contact, Wire-To-Board (WTB) IDC (Insulation Displacement Connector) with PTH (Plated Through Hole) terminations to its 9176 series. The connector provides a gas-tight connection to the PCB for long-term reliability as well as preassembled strain relief caps with through-wire or end-stop configurations for maximum flexibility.
Tested to withstand automotive levels of shock, vibration, and temperature cycling, the device is more cost-effective than hand soldering and two-piece connector options. The 9176-60X is suitable for the industrial control, SSL, smart grid, medical and transportation markets that utilise leaded components.
Rated for 600VAC, and capable of accepting 24–18AWG solid or stranded wires with 5–9A current ratings, the single tine connector also meets or exceeds the performance specifications of the only competing connector on the market in a form factor that is 13% lower profile, 30% shorter and 68% more narrow.
Operating across a temperature range of -40 to +125°C, the 9176-60X is compatible with potting and overmolding for sealed or waterproof environments. RoHS compliant and certified to both UL and CAN/CSA C22.2, the connector is available now and packaged on tape and reel for automated placement.
“The volumetric savings that our 9176 PTH IDC connector provides in comparison with the only other discrete wire PTH IDC connector on the market is hugely significant for development engineers with limited length, width and height requirements, which are increasingly common in newer technologies due to the popularity of smaller end products,” said Tom Anderson, Product Manager, AVX. “A few insulator-less PTH IDC contacts from another manufacturer are also available on the market, but they are made from 260 brass instead of phosphor bronze with tin over nickel plating, like the 9176 series, so they don’t compare with regard to performance.”
