Micrel today introduced the MIC23158/9, two high-efficiency 3MHz dual-output 2A buck regulators. Benefiting from Micrel’s proprietary HyperLight Load technology, the ICs provide ultra-fast transient response for today's most demanding applications including set-top boxes, core and I/O voltages for FPGAs, CPLDs, ASICs, GPS/navigation systems, PC cards, automotive instrumentation and general purpose point-of-load (POL) DC-to-DC conversions.
The MIC23158/9 devices offer up to 93 percent peak efficiency in PWM mode and ultra-fast response to sudden load variances. Micrel's proprietary architecture a lso produces very low output ripple voltage in full PWM mode with the use of small output capacitors. This full-featured solution also includes a Power Good (PG) signal that prevents the system from attempting to operate at improper voltages. It also features a programmable soft start that limits the in-rush current while the device is powering up. The total solution takes only 12mm x 12mm of board space.

By combining exceptional high efficiency, superior stability and transient response with innovative packaging to ensure the best power density and thermal performance across the entire load range, the MIC23158/9 delivers unprecedented performance and flexibility to designers, noted Brian Hedayati, vice president of marketing for high-performance Linear and Power Solutions at Micrel. Micrel's unique HyperLight Load architecture also offers the benefits of reduced bill-of-materials costs and world class transient response for applications such as portable point-of-sales terminals, USB wireless hubs and dongles, RFID reader cards, automotive electronics and point-of-load (POL) applications.

The MIC23158/9 both come in a thermally enhanced 20-pin 3mm x 4mm MLF package and offer two independent supply inputs ranging from 2.7V to 5.5V. The y offer two adjustable outputs ranging from 1.0V to 3.6V and up to 2A output current per channel. The MIC23158/9 also offer very low quiescent current (45µA/channel) and achieve as high as 83 percent efficiency at load currents as lo w as 1mA. Both solutions also offer two independent Power Good (PG) output indicators, enable inputs and programmable soft-start inputs. The devices operate at a junction temperature range of -40C to +125C-degrees. The MIC23159 comes with an additional active pull down circuit to discharge the output when the device is disabled.

The MIC23158/9 are currently available in volume with pricing starting at $0.88/$0.91 for 1K quantities.
