Digi-Key at embedded world 2023 with Murata
At embedded world 2023, on the Digi-Key booth, Paige West speaks with Suman Thapa, Product Engineer for Connectivity Modules (LPWA) at Murata Electronics about cellular IoT and Murata’s Type 1SE module.
Murata is a global leader in the design, manufacture and supply of advanced electronic materials, components and multi-functional, high-density modules.
Cellular IoT connects physical objects utilising the same cellular network currently used by smartphones, connecting IoT devices using existing mobile networks.
Underlining its expertise in developing low-power wireless hardware, Murata displayed its latest product innovations at embedded world 2023. Among the demonstrations was the Type 1SE (LBAD0ZZ1SE), a Cat. M1/NB-IoT module that operates from 703 to 960 MHz and 1,710 to 2,170 MHz.. It meets the certification standards in Japan and supports Truphone eSIM technology.
It is based on an Altair ALT1250+ST STM32L462RE/Cortex M4 processor and includes 512 KB flash, 160 KB SRAM and 1 MB onboard serial flash. This module has an internal Truphone (Worldwide operation) eSIM (WLCSP) and supports 3GPP eDRX and PSM modes to reduce power consumption.
It requires a DC supply from 3.3 to 5V and has very low power consumption enabling up to 10-year battery life. This module provides a Tx power of 23 dBm and has an Rx sensitivity of -103 dBm.
It is available in an LGA package with metal case that measures 15.4 x 18.0 x 2.5mm with a U.FL connector for an external antenna interface and can be controlled via GPIO, ADC, I2C, JTAG, PWM, SPI and UART interfaces.
“This product is a collaboration of four different companies bringing their expertise together into the form of this module,” says Suman Thapa.
Typical applications for this module includes smart metering, wearables, tracking, M2M and internet of things (IoT) edge nodes.
