Although the development of LED lighting technology, especially with regard to efficacy and the production costs of semiconductors, has not yet been maximized, there is already a new technology standing at the ready: organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) – a technology that uses organic materials for illumination.
The first OLED-TVs that don’t need background lighting are scheduled to hit the market this year. The first OLED-Displays for notebooks, mobile phones and MP3-Players are already available. It is going to take some time, however, before this technology is ready to enter the domestic market as the main lighting source.

Siegfried Luger, the Symposium Director, commented on these latest developments: “Partners, suppliers and networks are needed for getting into the market and strengthening market positions. For this to happen, we need to meet and work with the leaders in the LED lighting industry. Key global, leading service, component, module, manufacturing and distributor partners will all be present at the LpS 2012 EXPO.”

Registration for the LED professional Symposium + Expo 2012 is in full flow. A lot of delegates are using the opportunity to register at the 15% reduced Early Bird Rate that finishes on June 30th. The organizers strongly recommend early booking to secure one of the limited spaces for the workshop that takes place on the first day.

In addition to the 8 sessions, this year the symposium also features 3 Tech-Panels. This gives attendees the opportunity to discuss highly current topics with a small group of specialists. OLED, Thermal-Management and LED Lamp Tech-Panel discussions will be set-up with the experts to deepen the attendee’s knowledge in these specific domains.

OLEDs are the next challenge that luminaire manufacturers will be facing. In some aspects they can be treated similarly to LEDs but not in others. Luminaire and module manufacturers have certainly learned from the inorganic relatives of the OLEDs and OLED suppliers are working hard to optimize the technical and quality parameters. However, some questions may still be unanswered or unclear. The expert panel will discuss and clarify technical issues such as OLED types, color consistency and luminous homogeneity, reliability, temperature dependencies as well as how to drive OLEDs.

Thermal management will deal with the efficacy of LEDs that have improved a great deal over the years. However, in an LED lighting system 60-80% of electrical energy is still transformed into heat and has to be dissipated. Discussions are ongoing concerning which thermal management method should be applied. There are the questions of whether active or passive cooling is sufficient or necessary and if it leads to a relevant increase of system efficiency or not. Does it sacrifice or improve system reliability? Does it increase costs disproportionally? Can it improve light quality? The expert panel will talk about and shed light on these and other technical issues.

LED replacement lamps have made a great deal of progress. The first 100W equivalent bulbs were announced recently and will be available on the market soon. Designing reliable replacement bulbs is still one of the most challenging tasks. Engineers have to deal with inappropriate form-factors, sockets, dimming devices or other electronics. One may ask if there are alternative solutions and what they might look like. On the other hand, we have to find solutions that will serve the billions of existing sockets and apply technologies that lead to reliable products immediately. The plenum will be discussing the different approaches and technical key issues for lamp designs.

The Symposium and Expo will, once again, be held at the famous Festspielhaus in Bregenz. The lectures will take place in the “Grosser Saal” and the exhibitors will be found in the “Werkstadtbühne”. The workshop and the Tech-Panels will take place in a specially equipped room close by. For the evening’s Get-Together on the 26th, the organizers have chartered a ship to cruise on Lake Constance. Many of the symposium speakers, presenters, sponsors, exhibitors and visitors will be attending. Live music in combination with the beautiful scenery along the Austrian, Swiss and German lake shores ensure a casual and enjoyable evening.
