How OLEDs can produce power efficient displays
The billboards of Times Square are a sight to behold. A hub of entertainment, tourism and culture, these dazzling displays use 161 megawatts of electricity annually and cost nearly $10m to operate. Here Duncan Clark, of NextGen Nano, explores how this OLED technology can be used to create bright, high contrast displays.
Laser system to create grease-repellent metal surfaces
The end of scrubbing ovens and home appliances with chemicals or heat could soon be in sight, thanks to a new high power laser system being developed to put ‘self-cleaning’, grease-repellent and antibacterial properties into sheet metal. Teaming up with appliance giant Bosch, the European photonics consortium behind the system could soon see their technology create fluid-repellent surfaces fitted inside the next generation of dishwash...

Powering next generation horticultural illumination systems
The Earth’s population has rocketed upwards over the last few decades, rising from four billion in the mid-1970s to almost double that figure today. At the same time the land resources available for food production are being placed under threat, due to global warming and increasing urbanisation (as well as competition for space with biofuel crops). Patrick Hooijen, Product Development Manager, TTI, investigates.
Solar lighting innovations boost energy efficiency
Signify has installed solar luminaires on Leipsoi Island in Greece to protect the island’s environment while enhancing safety in places that were insufficiently illuminated before. This sustainable solar lighting solution was commissioned by Fotis Mangos, Mayor of the Municipality of Leipsoi.

Colour Kinetic lighting in Guanyin Altar
Signify has completed the installation of Colour Kinetics luminaires and Luminous Textile panels in the ‘Guanyin Altar’ Buddhist temple on Mount Putuo in Zhejiang Province, China. It’s the first time Luminous Textile panels have been installed in a domed ceiling, creating a representation of skylight using dynamic colour lighting, dynamic video content, and music.
BIOS and Lumileds partnership for human centric lighting
Human Centric Lighting (HCL) innovator BIOS, and global lighting solutions provider Lumileds, have joined forces to create a new SkyBlue LED that doubles previously available chip performance. The new 3030 mid-power LED reduces the lumen per dollar development barrier facing luminaire manufacturers and eliminates a key barrier to bringing better, healthier lighting solutions to market.
Smart lighting for your outdoor space this winter
