WinCC open architecture selected for Heathrow rail infrastructure

Siemens’ industry-leading WinCC OA SCADA software platform has been selected as a critical element of a major upgrade project for the Heathrow rail Tunnel Control System (TCS) - a key management system that monitors and oversees passenger safety. It also controls a number of key subsystems for the airport’s transportation service.

The system integrator for the project is Siemens’ WinCC solution partner, Firstco. Its engineers will design, build and commission the new TCS solution, and the successful migration of all subsystems from the existing 2003 system. The project is anticipated to take 18 months.

Firstco has had a long standing relationship with Heathrow Airport for over 20 years and its proven track record in project delivery was a key element in securing the TCS upgrade project.

“The project is a substantial and complex challenge involving, among others, the control of tunnel lighting, tunnel smoke control and ventilation, traction power, lifts, escalators, CCTV, fire alarm, public address, train information displays, telephones and tunnel radio. These are all essential systems designed to keep the travelling public and employees safe, and the day-to-day operation of the rail services as efficient as possible.”
