THIELMANN WEW addresses generic base architecture requirements
THIELMANN WEW has expanded its military base support capabilities with a new approach to Generic Base Architecture (GBA) requirements. GBA is a Defence Standard that specifies mandatory standards for data, power, water, waste and fuel infrastructure in an operational military base or headquarters, including mechanical interfaces for all equipment.
Top ten items that kids would take into space
Space is filled with infinite discoveries waiting to be found, but new research from the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) has found home comforts would be hard to leave behind with more than a third (36%) of children saying they would most like to take their TV to space with them should they ever leave the planet.
Connectors for demanding military vehicle applications at DSEI
TT Electronics has introduced three highly diverse connector solutions designed for harsh environment applications: Pola Power, OcTrain and SteadiShield. These innovative additions to the TT interconnect range have been developed to meet the power and connectivity demands of today’s military vehicle requirements and all will be on display at DSEI 2019, taking place in London from 10th - 13th September.
Apollo 11: A future in space, thanks to our past
A chorus of alarms serenaded the nervous astronauts as the Eagle lunar module descended toward the moon’s surface. The tension was palpable, and the shrill ringing only added to their worries. Guest blog written by Ranjan Sikand, Wind River Intern.
Hyperbolic mirrors for deep space observation
Optical Surfaces has developed a hyperbolic mirror for deep space observation. A hyperbolic mirror is the optical component of choice for precisely and accurately focusing light in a telescope from one focal point to the other focal point. Hyperbolic mirrors are used in a telescope design to correct certain distortions caused by an extremely fast f-ratio design.
AFRC makes move into space industry
The University of Strathclyde’s Advanced Forming Research Centre (AFRC) is making its way into the space industry, working with Airbus Defence and Space (Airbus DS) and TWI to bring the manufacture of space propellant tanks back to the UK.
Challenges for next-gen military communications
Military communications (MILCOM) have been the backbone for deployed soldiers since the Vietnam War. While these units have proven their capability and security for decades, the next generation of MILCOM platforms will need to leverage more modern communication technologies that have been developed to enable commercial platforms such as mobile phones and WiFi. Wyatt Taylor, Aerospace and Defense System Engineering Lead, Analog Devices explains.
Space-qualified multi-output LVDS hybrid oscillators
Q-Tech has announced the availability of the QT6xxLW Multiple Output LVDS Series of space qualified crystal oscillators. These MIL-PRF-55310 oscillators are Type 1 Class 2 hybrids, delivering exceptional frequency and temperature stability for space satellite and other high-performance aerospace applications. Units in the series are available with from 1 to 12 LVDS differential output pairs at selected frequencies between 15 MHz to 200 MHz.
Aluminium alloy breaks the critical 500 MPa UTS mark
A20X, the aluminium alloy developed and patented by UK foundry specialist Aeromet International, has cemented its status one of the strongest aluminium additive manufacturing powders commercially available after surpassing the key 500 MPa UTS mark.
Ultra-low-temperature FKM for aerospace applications
Greene Tweed’s Fusion FKM 665, a new generation, ultra-low-temperature and chemical-resistant elastomer, was specifically formulated to meet and exceed the requirements of Aerospace Material Specification (AMS) 7379 and AMS-P-83461.
