A quad port 40GbE gearbox PHY, claimed to be an industry first, has been introduced by Broadcom. The BCM82764, which operates alongside the company's StrataXGS, converts 20Gb/s signals to multiple lanes running at 10Gb/s. By using the high density PHY, users can provide 40GbE ports while using the full bandwidth of the switch.
Cloud-scale switch series delivers 3.2Tb/s
Designed for cloud-scale data centres, the StrataXGS Tomahawk switch series has been released by Broadcom. Delivering 3.2Tb/s switching capacity, the series is claimed to be the industry's highest performing Ethernet switch. The switch series integrates more than 7bn transistors, enabling the transformation of next-gen cloud fabrics to all-25Gb/s per-lane interconnect and increasing link performance by 2.5 times.
20nm 100G PHY is claimed to be a world first
Developed with NTT Electronics, a 20nm 100G PHY claimed to be the first of its kind, has been released by Broadcom. Designed for use in 100G optical fibre communication systems, PHY enables NTT Electronics' DSP. The PHY consumes less than half the power of existing long-haul coherent ICs and expands the use of coherent technology to metro and shorter reach links.

Broadcom has announced that its UHD (Ultra High-Definition) SoC technology has been selected by SK Broadband to power the B UHD tv STB and IPTV services. The BCM7252 allows the telecomms provider to substantially reduce the bandwidth required for UHD content transmission over its fibre, DSL or cable networks.

Optimised for next-gen cloud-scale data centre, enterprise and core networks, Broadcom claims that the BCM82792 is the industry's highest performance, lowest power multi-rate 100GbE gearbox physical layer transceiver (PHY). The device offers dual 100Gbps ports on a single gearbox chip, increasing the density while reducing power consumption (2W per port).

The Cisco VideoGuard security certification for Pay-TV has been awarded to Broadcom for it's set-top box (STB) HEVC 4K HD SoCs. Utilising the BCM7444 and BCM7252 SoCs, the digital signage media players deliver native 4K, 60fps video and 10-bit colour for a variety of commercial applications. The SoCs integrate HEVC technology, reducing bandwidth usage by 50% and allowing Ultra HD content to be delivered in half the time.
