Embedded SIM controllers enable secure M2M communications

Suitable for industrial and automotive M2M such as eCall and V2V communication, Infineon Technologies has introduced the SLM 97 and SLI 97 security controllers. The devices enable the full implementation of embedded SIM as defined by GSMA and ETSI, increasing flexibility and simplifying the deployment of new M2M solutions.

Both the SLM 97 and SLI 97 provide up to 1MB SOLID FLASH memory, for fast prototyping and a short time-to-market, a set of hardware crypto-coprocessors supporting all relevant crypto schemes and interfaces including ISO7816, SWP, USB, I2C and SPI. They both operate over a temperature range from -40 to 105°C with high endurance for demanding industrial and automotive environments. The controllers are also Common Criteria EAL 5+ (High) certified.

Delivered in standard embedded M2M packages as well as in standard SIM card module, the SLM 97 security controllers are tailored to industrial M2M applications requiring high endurance and robustness.

The SLI 97 security controllers are tailored to the difficult environmental conditions of automotive applications. The AEC-Q100 qualified devices undergo exhaustive quality processes to minimise failure rates, making them suited for SIM cards or embedded security products in connected cars.

Vehicles exchanging information about traffic conditions, industrial machines with self-checking diagnostics, intelligent tracking of the supply chain or surveillance of utility meters in remote areas: in the connected world, devices will increasingly rely on secured cellular M2M communication for automated data exchange.

ETSI notes the fast growth of M2M communication and the preference for cellular-based M2M solutions where mobility is required, or where high data volumes or data transfer rates are involved. And market research firm IHS forecasts that the worldwide market for cellular modules in M2M communication will grow from 88m unit shipments in 2015 to 167m units in 2018 with a CAGR of 24%.
