AVX has expanded the original 9175 series of discrete wire-to-board Insulation Displacement Connectors (IDC) into two larger formats to meet the growing market requests. Originally designed to accept 26AWG to 28AWG stranded or solid wires, the 9176 and 9177 series have been added to now include 18AWG to 24AWG and 14AWG to 20AWG respectively. This expansion opens up the market now across a broader range of applications.

The value of this connector is achieved from the total applied cost of the wire connection. This is achieved from the simplicity of the connector and wire termination process. For starters, the 2 position and 3 position connectors are tape and reel packaged for high volume SMT placement onto the PCB. The individual wires are then located over the top of the contact and are simply and reliably pressed into the slot via hand or arbor type press-in tools. This process allows the contact tines to pierce the insulation jacket which creates a gas tight connection, while using plastic insulator features to securely grab the insulation providing a strong strain relief on the final assembly. There is no wire stripping or preparation needed prior to termination. Contact material is phosphor bronze, with three re-terminations achievable for each individual contact.

These connectors are unlike anything currently available on the market, as they have a smaller footprint, are end-to-end stackable and assembling the wires to the connector is very easy. said Bob Bastian, AVX Product Manager. AVX discrete wire IDC connectors are manufactured with high temperature nylon material to withstand RoHS reflow processes and high working temperatures. The IDC connectors are based on automotive level temperature and vibration specifications, resulting in products that are robust and suitable for a wide variety of harsh operating conditions. Providing design flexibility, these connectors are available in two and three position configurations that can be end-to-end stackable to deliver the exact number of terminations required.

In addition to standard wire gauges, the connectors have been tested to a wide range of insulation composition and diameters. With such a broad wire range accommodated within the product series, a wide variety of applications within the Industrial, Medical, Automotive and Transportation markets. Very specifically, the LED lighting market is a perfect fit for this type of connector, for use in LED lighting strips for sports arena signs, display cases, lighted cabinets, advertising signs, and architectural lights used for building feature enhancement or internal feature lighting. The connectors also suit solar panels, emergency signage and automotive applications - internally or outside of car - as well as high volume consumer market applications such as speakers, buzzers, microphones, vibration mechanisms.

The IDC 9175, 9176 and 9177 Series are rated in current at 1A, 10A and 15A respectively, with corresponding stranded wire gauges of 26-28 AWG, 18-24 AWG and 14-20AWG. The parts have a voltage rating of 125V, deliver a minimum insulation resistance of 100M?, and a maximum termination resistance of 20m?. All three series have operating temperature ranges of -40°C to +105°C.
