The Nanotechnology Knowledge Transfer Network (NanoKTN), one of the UK’s primary knowledge-based networks for Micro and Nanotechnologies, is pleased to announce details of an EPSRC funded research collaboration between a UK SME and the University of Surrey.
The Engineering Doctorate in Micro- and NanoMaterials and Technologies, hosted by the University of Surrey, has been launched to provide companies with access to state-of-the-art equipment and facilities, with additional input and support from the University’s world-renowned academics. With significant funding provided by the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), the Engineering Doctorate is a cost-effective way for companies to benefit from research. By offering this opportunity, the University of Surrey hopes to bridge gaps between academia and industry, helping companies to develop new solutions that will shape the future of applied materials science.

The NanoKTN’s primary aim is to support organisations and encourage collaboration between academic institutions and UK companies, with the aim of achieving growth in the UK nanotechnology sector. Indestructible Paint, the high performance coatings manufacturer, has confirmed that the support and professional advice provided by the NanoKTN has been an essential part of the successful funding application.

“We have worked with the NanoKTN for a number of years now and Martin Kemp, Engineering Applications Theme Manager at the NanoKTN has continuously encouraged us to apply for funding, helping us understand the processes and assisting our applications. The continued support and direction from Martin put us in the position where we were able to confidently apply for the EPSRC Knowledge Transfer Partnershipfunding that has now led us to this fantastic collaboration with the University of Surrey,” explains Brian Norton, CEO of Indestructible Paint.

Brian Norton continues, “Future research with the University of Surrey will allow us to focus our attention on nanotechnology and how it can help us grow the company and further develop our products. In the past, we have seen problems with the use of nanoparticles and we hope this research project will give us the opportunity to learn how nanotechnology can help us develop stronger and more resistant paints.”

As well as support and advice, Indestructible Paint has also seen other benefits from its NanoKTN membership, including access to relevant NanoKTN events. Attending and speaking at events has enabled the company to learn about the needs of the market and its potential customers, as well as maintaining an up-to-date knowledge of relevant developments in technology and legislation.

Martin Kemp, Theme Manager at the NanoKTN adds, “It has been a pleasure working with Indestructible Paint, watching the Company grow and offering them advice along the way. Building partnerships is crucial to companies, particularly those in the early stages of development. It allows companies to establish business contacts and make a name within a competitive industry. The NanoKTN’s events are particularly targeted at start-ups and speciality companies looking for exposure and I would recommend them to any UK SMEs looking to network and raise their company profile.”
