Sellafield Women's Engineering Society recognised at UK awards
Sellafield Ltd’s ‘Women’s Engineering Society’ celebrated its success after winning the ‘Regional Innovation’ category at this year’s Women in Nuclear UK Awards.
The announcement was made at an awards ceremony in Manchester this week. These awards recognise and celebrate those who have championed diversity and inclusion within their organisations and beyond.
The Sellafield Women’s Engineering Society (WES) was formed in 2019, coinciding with the centenary year of the national Women’s Engineering Society. Its mission is to foster a diverse engineering industry at Sellafield, enabling women in engineering to fulfil their potential and promoting an inclusive engineering industry.
In 2022, Sellafield WES officially partnered with the national Women’s Engineering Society. The ‘Regional Innovation’ category, in which they triumphed, was introduced to acknowledge efforts in promoting gender balance within the nuclear industry and to highlight the sector’s evolving inclusive culture.
Jennifer Maher, manufactured products delivery manager at Sellafield Ltd, nominated the society for the award. She explained: “I nominated the WES team because they have run events and webinars to support women at all career stages at Sellafield, in order to retain them and help them reach their goals. The win was well deserved and will encourage them to continue.”
This year saw more entries than ever, and the judging panel enjoyed learning about the contributions individuals and organisations are making to positively impact the nuclear sector.
All attendees who received the award are active members of the society and work across the Sellafield site in various roles.
