As a seasoned technologist, a vehement advocate for women in technology, and a self-professed rebel, Rao is passionate about her career and helping other women in their tech careers.

Supported by her engineering parents, Rao’s early exposure to tech laid the groundwork for a vibrant career.

“I’ve been coding since I was a child … I just love math and how beautiful the subject is – because with it you can solve problems in many different ways.”

However, a career in tech wasn’t always on the cards.

Moments that change everything

Originally a career in medicine was in Rao’s future, but a momentous conversation with her mother, who advised her she might prefer a career in engineering due to her strong analytical skills, was the moment she pivoted into tech.

However, it wasn’t until she became a parent that she also learned the power that children can have to positively change your life and career: “[My children] have set things in motion for me – I would not have gone out and done something out of my comfort zone before them.

“I had become so comfortable working in a male-dominated environment and unconsciously adapted to it over time. However, when I started working with more women, I began to see things from a different perspective and allowed my authentic self to emerge."

Everyone has value

Born in Germany and raised in India, Rao has experienced diverse cultures and challenges, which have shaped her into a resilient and driven individual.

“I believe that everyone brings value, no matter their experience or background, whether it's the CEO, an experienced engineer like myself, or women entering tech. I want women to remember this."

As well as a dedicated career, Rao also speaks at numerous events, sharing her insights and experiences with global audiences.

In her various roles throughout her career, Rao has been in charge of steering technological direction and ensuring that organisations remains at the cutting edge of the industry, as well as strategic oversight, team leadership, and direct involvement in product development and innovation strategies.

Empowering women in tech

Rao’s passion lies in promoting diversity and inclusion within the tech industry. She is particularly focused on encouraging women to pursue careers in technology and ensuring they have the support and opportunities they need in order to succeed. Her vision is to see women at the forefront of innovation and tech, breaking stereotypes, and contributing to the industry's growth.

This passion for diversity stems from her personal experiences and her desire to create a better future for her children and many girls like them. She believes that having more women in tech will lead to more inclusive and innovative solutions.

“Seeing women at the forefront of innovation and tech is absolutely energising. I can wake up every morning thinking about it with immense energy.”

Rao’s dedication to this cause is evident in her involvement with Women Who Code, an organisation she has been deeply committed to. Even after the organisation’s closure, Rao and her team swiftly transitioned to form the Women Coding Community, ensuring that the support network for women in tech continues to thrive.

Her vision is not only about professional success but also about raising her daughters in a world where they are valued for their abilities and not constrained by gender stereotypes.

Normalising diversity

Rao believes in the power of community and the importance of systematic changes at home, in schools, and within organisations. By normalising the presence of women in tech from an early age, Rao aims to break down the barriers that currently exist.

She also emphasises the need for inclusive leadership, flexible work policies, and psychological safety within organisations to support women in tech. Her approach involves not only advocating for women but also engaging men in the conversation about diversity and inclusion.

“50% of the population are men, and if we create an impact along with them, the ripple effect will be significant.”

Rao’s involvement with Women Coding Community is a testament to her commitment to this cause. The community focuses on mentorship, technical skill development, and holistic growth, providing women with the tools and support they need to succeed. Rao and her team are dedicated to creating an environment where women can thrive and contribute meaningfully to the tech industry.

Vision for the future

Rao aims not only to increase the number of women in tech but also to ensure they are supported throughout their careers to reach leadership roles and make impactful contributions.

"It’s about understanding that everybody has the power. Ask yourself, 'What is the impact of what I do?”

She hopes her efforts will catalyse broader societal shifts, advocating for changes in corporate policies, educational curricula, and more, to foster an environment where women can thrive.

“Everything we do is like a drop in the ocean and that drop in the ocean is what will eventually make the ocean itself.”

Rao’s proactive stance and dedication to mentoring women reflect a deep understanding of the systemic challenges and provide a blueprint for others in the industry to follow.

Through her actions, Rao continues to inspire and pave the way for future generations of women in technology. Through her work, she is shaping a future where women are integral to the tech industry, driving innovation, and creating a more inclusive world.

Her message to the world is clear: with courage, vision, and community support, women can achieve remarkable success.
