The advantages of Li-Fi
Li-Fi, short for Light Fidelity, is an innovative wireless communication technology that uses light instead of radio waves to transmit information.
Using visible light, ultraviolet and near-infrared (NIR) to carry data at high speeds, Li-Fi is considered to be a potential alternative to traditional Wi-Fi networks, which use radio waves to transmit data.
Based on the principle of Visible Light Communication (VLC), Li-Fi involves the use of light-emitting diodes (LEDs), laser diodes or any other visible emitter to transmit data.
The term Li-Fi was first introduced in a 2011 TED Talk by Professor Harald Haas of the University of Edinburgh. The technology works by using LED lights to transmit data at high speeds. The data is encoded into the light using a technique known as Visible Light Communication (VLC), and then received by a photodiode receiver. This receiver converts the modulated light signal back into data that can be read by computers or other electronic devices.
The technology has several advantages over traditional Wi-Fi networks. One of the most significant advantages is speed. Li-Fi can deliver data at speeds up to 100x faster than Wi-Fi. This is because light can carry much more information than radio waves.
Another advantage of Li-Fi is its security. Because the signal is transmitted via visible light, it cannot pass through walls or other solid objects, making it much more difficult for hackers to intercept or access the signal. Also, because the signal is confined to a specific area where the LED lights are located, it is much easier to control who has access to the network.
Though line of sight is believed to affect the quality of the signal, it is not necessary to have a line of sight between the transmitter and the receiver. In theory, any light path that exists between the transmitter and receiver can support a Li-Fi link as long as the power budget is arranged to cope with losses from the diffusion.
Li-Fi is a promising technology that has the potential to revolutionise the way we connect and communicate wirelessly.
