An agreement to develop and market one of the industry’s most promising wireless power solutions for consumer electronic devices and the fast-growing IoT space has been announced between ON Semiconductor and PowerSphyr. The agreement calls for ON Semiconductor to integrate its efficient power management components with PowerSphyr’s wireless power transfer (WPT) technology, which combines near-field and far-field wireless charging, to create a new class of chipsets targeted at OEMs.

The companies expect to develop the world’s first universally compatible wireless charging solutions that support interoperability with the major wireless power standards to allow device charging without cables or connectors. Inside each device enabled by PowerSphyr, there will be a system based on the new application specific integrated circuits (ASICs) with support through ON Semiconductor’s global sales and technical support teams. Over the long term, PowerSphyr will continue to share future technology with ON Semiconductor to create new opportunities for further semiconductor integration.

“ON Semiconductor is pleased to work with PowerSphyr to develop a new class of ASICs that combine both companies’ proprietary technologies and provide OEMs with an opportunity to improve the consumer experience in wireless charging,” said Bob Klosterboer, Executive Vice President and General Manager of the ON Semiconductor’s Analogue Products Group.

PowerSphyr CEO Neil Ganz added: “Support from ON Semiconductor’s foundry and global distribution network will accelerate the production of the world’s first universally compatible chipset that drives near-field and far-field seamlessly into a comprehensive solution.”

ON Semiconductor supplies integrated circuit solutions to various markets, including mobile communications, computing and IoT. The company operates fabrication facilities with more than 30,000 employees supporting custom design, engineering and manufacturing around the globe.

Based in the San Francisco-Bay Area, PowerSphyr has developed a first-to-market, multi-technology wireless power architecture that supports RF-to-DC, Magnetic Resonance, as well as backwards compatibility for legacy inductive charging (e.g. Qi, PMA).

“ON Semiconductor’s chip-making expertise, combined with PowerSphyr’s unique IP, creates the perfect synergy to drive adoption of next-gen wireless charging,” said David Meng, Founder, Chief Marketing and Chief Technology Officer. “The level of compatibility that our solutions offer is unprecedented and eliminates the difficult choices today facing OEM device-makers when selecting one standard over another.”
