TDC has launched a Bluetooth module with an open-field range of one kilometre from its internal antenna, the longest range of any Bluetooth module. The range can be further extended by adding high gain directional antenna.

The EZURiO BTM402 BISM II module from TDC is a fully qualified Bluetooth version 2.0 solution with a range of up to 1km, that gives developers a drop-in communications solution requiring minimal integration and no type approval. According to TDC, Bluetooth devices normally have a range of just 10m, rising to 300m for high performance modules. The new EZURiO module should allow many new applications to benefit from the use of this stable and well-recognised standard.

Developed specifically for battery powered applications, the EZURiO module from TDC supports low power modes including a sniff mode where consumption is just 2.5mA. In full operation, the module draws a modest 130mA from a 3.6V – 5V dc source. Its highly compact size of just 25mm x 35mm x 8mm further facilitates implementation in portable systems.

Key features of the BTM402 include generous I/O provision for connection to other system resources. These include nine general purpose I/O ports, two 8-bit analogue input lines and three PCM audio channels. The module is pin and format compatible with EZURiO 802.11 WLAN modules, allowing developers to implement Bluetooth and Wi-Fi versions of a product using the same board.

The EZURiO BTM402 BISM II PA Bluetooth Serial Module is a fully integrated and qualified Class 1 Bluetooth solution with RF, baseband, antenna and protocol stack. It can deliver transmit powers of up to 65mW at 1,000 metres in open field conditions, as a result of careful tuning of the power amplifier and the low noise amplifier to maximise the RF link budget and to match the internal high sensitivity, high gain antenna. The module incorporates the CSR BlueCore 04 chipset.
