Google unveils Android XR, alongside Samsung and Qualcomm
Google, in partnership with Samsung and Qualcomm, has introduced Android XR, a new operating system designed to redefine user experiences in extended reality (XR).
Combining advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), augmented reality (AR), and virtual reality (VR), Android XR aims to create immersive opportunities for exploration, connection, and creativity.
A platform for the next era of computing
Android XR represents Google’s latest step towards building a unified platform for XR devices such as headsets and smart glasses. The company has collaborated with Samsung to develop this system, which will also serve as the foundation for an ecosystem of developers and device manufacturers.
To support innovation, Android XR’s developer preview has been launched, enabling developers to build apps and games using familiar tools such as ARCore, Android Studio, Jetpack Compose, Unity, and OpenXR. Qualcomm’s XR partners, including Lynx, Sony, and XREAL, will also use Android XR to develop a diverse range of devices. Additionally, Google is extending its partnership with Magic Leap to advance XR technology and explore AR and AI-driven solutions.
Blending technology into daily life
The initial wave of Android XR devices will focus on headsets, starting with Samsung’s Project Moohan, set to launch next year. These headsets are designed to balance virtual immersion with real-world awareness, enabling users to seamlessly interact with both environments. The devices will feature Gemini, Google’s AI assistant, which will assist with tasks, provide contextual guidance, and even facilitate conversations about the virtual content in view.
Google is also reimagining its apps for XR headsets. Users will be able to:
- Watch YouTube and Google TV on virtual big screens
- Relive 3D memories with Google Photos
- Explore cities and landmarks using Google Maps' Immersive View
- Multitask efficiently with Chrome’s virtual screens
Additionally, Android XR will integrate mobile and tablet apps from Google Play, offering a smooth transition for users familiar with existing platforms.
A vision for smart glasses
Beyond headsets, Android XR will extend to smart glasses, which aim to provide continuous, hands-free assistance. These glasses will integrate with Android devices, offering features such as real-time translations, directions, and notifications – all within the user’s line of sight. Google plans to make the glasses stylish and practical for everyday use, with seamless integration powered by the Gemini AI assistant.
Real-world testing of prototype glasses running Android XR will commence soon with a small group of users. The trials will focus on creating privacy-conscious, helpful products.
Open ecosystem for XR innovation
Google envisions Android XR as a unified, open platform, offering users a wider choice of devices and seamless access to familiar apps. Developers benefit from the ability to create for a diverse range of XR hardware using tools and frameworks they already know.
Google encouraged developers, device makers, and content creators to join in shaping this transformative platform. More updates, including device availability, are expected next year. Developers can explore the Android Developers Blog for resources.
