Self-employed fibre optic installers can now rent Fujikura's newly launched fusion splicers from Livingston. The new products include the 70S which is suitable for use with both single and multi-mode fibres (including ITU-T G. 651/652/653/655/657). It features a 320x magnification 2-axis camera with CMOS image sensor a programmable wind protector, an automated tube heater, a high capacity lithium-ion battery and a 4.73in colour LCD

It has a splice time of just 7sec and a 14sec tube heating time. Users can choose from 100 different splice modes and 30 heating modes. Data on the last 2000 splices can be stored on its solid-state memory.

Enclosed in a compact (146x159x150mm) lightweight (2.7kg), robust package (which is shock, dust and moisture resistant), the portable device can typically carry out 200 splices before needing a recharge. This is complemented by Fujikura’s 70R ribbon splicer. Like the 70S, this incorporates an automatic, fully programmable wind protector. It has a 40sec tube heating time and can complete 110 splices on one battery charge.

Also available from Livingston are Fujikura’s 12S and 19S cladding-alignment fusion splicers, plus a variety of optical power meters and optical time-domain reflectometers (OTDRs).

“There are a great many self-employed people in the fibre sector and for them purchasing equipment isn’t a viable option. They want to follow a rental strategy which is much more in tune with their particular needs, allowing them to access fibre splicers and other tools just for the period necessary,” explains Reinier Treur, Marketing Director at Livingston. “Over the last year Livingston has set new records in term of quantities splicers shipped to clients and now we are looking to go beyond that by further increasing the scope of our offering.”

“We feel that our co-operation with Livingston has been highly beneficial,” states Stephen Rackstraw, UK Regional Sales Manager for Fujikura, “It means that we are able to fully address the ever changing distribution model, taking into account the need for a logistically efficient rental channel.” “Fujikura is supporting Livingston by providing its staff with in-depth technical training so the quality of the splicers and the support provided are of the highest calibre,” he concludes.
