Delphi Connectivity Transforms Vehicles from a Means of Transportation to On The Go Hotspots

Connectivity technologies are evolving at an unprecedented pace. Today, connected cars link to satellites and communication networks; tomorrow they will link to each other and the infrastructure.
At the 2011 IAA International Motor Show, Delphi Automotive is highlighting connected technologies that are revolutionizing the driving experience. With its open architecture expertise, scalable hardware platforms and high-speed connectivity solutions, Delphi is providing new high-value, differentiating features to vehicle manufacturers and more functionality for consumers.



Delphi innovators are working on smart connectivity solutions that make mobility more efficient, safe and entertaining, said Michael Gassen, president, Delphi Europe. Our innovations are helping to bridge the in-vehicle connectivity gap with products that seamlessly and flexibly connect drivers and passengers to individualized entertainment and information, allow them to communicate with other vehicles and the infrastructure – even to their cars when they are away from the vehicle.



High-speed Data Connectivity



Delphi is offering technologies that equip vehicles with more functionality than ever before – to include notifying drivers of mechanical or electronic problems, navigating around stopped traffic or congested highways, safely entertaining passengers, and even recognizing drivers as they approach the vehicle. These advanced reception, infotainment and vehicle access technologies communicate with each other and motorists via sophisticated Delphi data connectivity products that provide a superior user experience with high-speed data transfer throughout the vehicle. The innovative solutions minimize electromagnetic interference, perform reliably and enhance flexibility.



The growing demand for better and faster connectivity while on the go has intensified emphasis on vehicle electrical/electronic architecture, said Markus Kerkhoff, chief engineer Europe, Delphi Packard Electrical/Electronic Architecture. Automakers are announcing plans to replace standard options like the CD player, with plug-in digital data connectivity options. Delphi is providing high-speed data connectivity products to enable sophisticated connectivity features like these to function reliably throughout vehicle life.



MyFi Connected Infotainment Systems



Delphi is linking drivers to information and entertainment with its MyFi™ family of connected solutions. Serving as a hub for entertainment and communication features, MyFi systems use an open architecture platform to offer innovative implementation of features including Bluetooth, WiFi, and cellular connectivity, natural voice recognition, hands-free system operation and audio streaming. Premium MyFi connectivity solutions can even leverage local and wide area networks for smart phone apps, remote servers and cloud-based services.



Last year, Delphi introduced its first MyFi™ system – the connected navigation radio (CNR) – on the Audi A1. The CNR's open, well-structured architecture allows for more than 20 feature variations by configuring the vehicle's infotainment platform with simple software upgrades.



Over the next twelve months, Delphi will introduce new MyFi™ products that allow drivers to access smart phone apps housed on their personal phones, listen and reply to text messages, and utilize a state-of-the-art navigation engine, all while keeping their eyes on the road and hands on the wheel. Further into the future MyFi systems will integrate active safety technology that can monitor lane departure, warn drivers of drowsiness or imminent collision, and manage information flow from infotainment applications.



Delphi is helping vehicle manufacturers meet the needs of connected consumers by integrating infotainment, active safety, workload management and body security technology to minimize driver distraction and provide maximum value to vehicle manufacturers and consumers, said Jugal Vijayvargiya, general director of Delphi's Infotainment and Driver Interface Product. Advanced Reception Systems



Linking drivers to the vehicle's communication hub and outside world, Delphi's advanced reception systems can offer vehicle manufacturers access to multiple broadcast types and vehicle access features from a single antenna module. Providing links to AM, FM, GPS, cellular, satellite radio and DAB plus keyless entry and start, Delphi's multiservice antenna architecture allows vehicle manufacturers to choose the level of content desired and can be adapted to European, U.S. and Asian frequency requirements. Delphi antennas can stand alone or be integrated into the vehicle's roof, and as the infrastructure takes shape, they will facilitate car-2-car and car-2-x communication.



The internet can be safely integrated into vehicles via Delphi's Connectivity Module. With a direct connection to the antenna and a single digital connection to the infotainment center, the connectivity module minimizes system cost and signal disturbance by eliminating the need for multiple cable connections. Functioning as well as an internet router, the connectivity module enables wireless communication between the vehicle, the passenger compartment and the connected world, supports diagnostics and readying the vehicle for developments in telematics.



Smart Key Fobs



As antenna systems have evolved, so have key fobs. Helping to keep drivers connected with their vehicles even when they aren't in them, Delphi's smart key fobs use near-field communication (NFC) technology to provide a constant link to vehicle information while maintaining the security of data exchange. Offering the convenience of features such as a remote vehicle status check (e.g. lock/unlock), car finder and restoration of driver settings (seat, mirrors, radio station), Delphi's smart fob technology will be even more valuable as the market for hybrid and electric vehicles grows. With the fob, drivers could enhance awareness of energy and fuel consumption and mange them more effectively.



Visitors to Delphi's display at IAA 2011 will experience a unique demonstration illustrating how these versatile, innovative products and others work collaboratively to unlock the future of the connected car and make seamless and speedy connectivity possible.
