At embedded world 2022, on the Digi-Kkey booth, Paige West speaks with Brian Berner, Platform Marketing – Embedded Processors at Texas Instruments and True Loan, Application Engineer, PHYTEC America about building a smart EV charging station.

Taking a look at the EV charging demo on the TI booth, the brain behind that solution is the gateway – the AM62 MPU which was released just a few weeks ago. It is a low cost, low power, easy to use device that’s enabled by TI’s partner, PHYTEC, in the demo.

Berner has also been speaking with the experts over at the TI booth about GaN technology. He said: “Their opinion of GaN is that it’s very important but it depends on the voltage and total power.

“GaN and Silicon Carbide are going to be used a lot more across different systems.”

Semiconductor technology can also help to manage energy distribution through smart energy metering.

TI’s new Arm-based AM62x processors enable simpler and easier payment for EV charging. Loan comments: “It’s a very general-purpose platform and it runs Linux by default. That’s the standard offering at TI and that’s also what we support at PHYTEC.

“So, with Linux your possibilities are pretty endless. In this case, we’re utilising the Linux drivers and the stack there that’s included and we’re able to utilise the Wi link module for Wi-Fi and you can enable payments through your phone and things like that, via apps.”

Berner adds: “You also have the option to add on an NFC card reader and then the display capabilities of that device give you that interface.”
