Functional safety
You must have safety systems in place within a system that can cause harm to humans. The developer of that system must ensure that if there is potential harm, it is managed in some way. There are many ways to do this, the first being to ensure the specification is right and there are no software errors.
It differs from safety features in that safety features are a functional thing, while functional safety is making sure that function is working.
Svendsli offers an example of an engine failure when he travelled from Copenhagen to LA to better illustrate.
