Made Smarter is encouraging manufacturers to open their doors to schools, colleges, and local communities for National Manufacturing Day on 26th September.

The government-funded, industry-backed programme, which supports manufacturers in adopting new technology and skills, is participating in events across the North West, North East, and Yorkshire and Humber regions.

Now in its third year, National Manufacturing Day (NMD24) is organised by trade body Make UK and has grown into a nationwide celebration of the UK’s manufacturing industry. The initiative offers businesses a chance to host ‘open house’ events, inviting the public to witness how manufacturers operate, produce beloved household brands, and utilise cutting-edge technology.

With the sector facing high vacancy rates and a shrinking labour pool, NMD24 provides an invaluable opportunity for manufacturers to showcase the diverse careers available – from engineering and robotics to data analysis and innovation – and attract talent with the right skills.

Donna Edwards, Director for Made Smarter North West, shared her enthusiasm for the initiative: "I am delighted that Made Smarter and manufacturers involved in our adoption programme are supporting Make UK’s campaign. NMD24 aligns perfectly with our mission to help SME manufacturers achieve digital transformation through a people-led approach, using technology as a tool. It’s a fantastic opportunity to highlight the importance of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education and encourage students to explore these subjects, which is something we at Made Smarter are very passionate about.

"By opening their factories, manufacturers can showcase the immense progress made from the traditional image of manufacturing to today’s smart, modern factories. I encourage more manufacturers to join this campaign.”

In Yorkshire and Humber, Made Smarter is also hosting workshops to demonstrate how better data capture and management can unlock innovation, offering manufacturers valuable insights into integrating new technology.

Additionally, Made Smarter will celebrate the programme’s impact across the UK with a special LinkedIn Live broadcast on Thursday, 26th September at 12pm.

From a national perspective, Brian Holliday, co-chair of the Made Smarter Commission, will share insights for a special ITN programme highlighting the positive impact of the manufacturing industry. The programme, titled Manufacturing: Industry, Innovation and Impact, will air on NMD24 and feature contributions from Made in Britain and the Manufacturing Technologies Association.

Stephen Phipson, CEO of Make UK, emphasised the importance of the event: “National Manufacturing Day is an exciting opportunity for the entire manufacturing sector to unite and celebrate the incredible innovations that Britain designs and produces. Britain’s manufacturers are global leaders in renewable technologies and engineering, and this sector offers amazing opportunities. We hope that by opening up local businesses, people will get a first-hand view of the exciting developments happening and the potential career paths available.”
