SCD unveils Sparrow HD
SCD has introduced its latest innovation: the Sparrow HD detector. This next-generation Mid-Wave Infrared (MWIR) sensor module has an industry-first 5-micron pixel pitch, making it the smallest available in the market.
The Sparrow HD represents a significant advancement in infrared imaging technology, particularly for defence and homeland security applications.
The new Sparrow HD builds on SCD's expertise in 5-micron technology, first demonstrated with the highly successful Crane detector. Offering high performance in a Size, Weight, and Power (SWaP)-optimised design, the Sparrow HD is positioned to set a new standard in the infrared imaging field. Its predecessor, the original Sparrow detector, has seen widespread adoption, with thousands of units being delivered annually for a range of applications, from handheld thermal imagers to advanced payloads for Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) and vehicle-mounted systems.
What sets the Sparrow HD apart is its ability to provide more pixels on target, significantly enhancing both detection and identification capabilities. It is available in two configurations: High Operating Temperature (HOT) XBn, which operates at 150K, and HOT Full-Mid-Wave (HFM), both designed to cater to a wide variety of tactical defence applications. The sensor’s mechanical design is also flexible, offering configurations in both 90-degree vertical and horizontal orientations. This versatility makes it ideal for multifunctional systems such as Multi-functional Handheld Thermal Imagers (HHTIs), aerial gimbals, loitering munitions, and remote weapon stations.
Designed for large-scale production at a cost-effective rate, the Sparrow HD incorporates advanced interfaces like MIPI CSI, allowing seamless integration with Edge AI processors. Optional video engine and image processing features enhance the module's adaptability, catering to the rising demand for high-resolution imaging and automated target recognition in combat scenarios.
Shai Fishbein, VP of Business Development & Marketing at SCD, emphasised the significance of this new technology: "The Sparrow HD is a major breakthrough in infrared detection, building on our advanced 5-micron pixel technology. Its high-definition performance allows us to offer the industry a robust, scalable solution for modern defence challenges. With the ability to integrate across multiple platforms, from UAS to advanced weapon systems, Sparrow HD sets a new standard for both tactical flexibility and operational efficiency."
