RGBW sensor eliminates external sensor, lowers costs

Vishay Intertechnology has launched a new digital RGBW sensor featuring Filtron technology for accurate RGBW spectral sensitivity, while providing ambient light spectral sensitivity with responses close to that of the human eye. It is on sale at distributor Rutronik. The VEML6040 colour sensor incorporates photo-pin-diodes (RGBW) and a signal processing IC in a compact 2.0 x 1.25 x 1.0mm surface-mount, 4-pin OPLGA package, while offering an I2C bus interface for simple operation.

It senses red, green, blue as well as white light and offers 16-bit resolution for each colour channel. The sensor makes LCD and LED panels more comfortable for end users’ eyes and provides fluorescent light flicker immunity.

With an operating voltage and I2C bus voltage range of 2.5V to 3.6V, a low power in shutdown mode of < 1µA and an excellent temperature compensation stability from -40° to +85°C, the VEML6040 sensor is ideal for a wide range of applications, e.g. colour balancing, backlight control, and colour temperature measurement in consumer devices such as smartphones, digital camera, and televisions.

The sensor lowers costs and simplifies designs by eliminating the need for an external resistor. Its wide ALS detection range from 0.0056lx to 11.7klx allows the device to operate in applications with dark lens designs. It is RoHS-compliant, halogen-free and Vishay green.
