Directly connect Hall effect sensor into automotive designs

Incorporating amplifier, analogue output and internal compensation circuits, Melexis has announced the MLX90290 linear Hall sensor IC. The monolithically integrated magnetic sensor IC converts magnetic flux into an analogue output, guaranteeing critical functional parameters to absolute levels, simplifying integration by removing the need for end-of-line calibration.

Design engineers can, therefore, provide cutting-edge position sensing solutions without extra end-of-line testing and validation, saving development time and effort. Off-the-shelf versions can be combined with MCUs to enable fast and accurate rotary, linear or motor commutation applications. It can also be combined with a ferrite toroid core in order to sense DC and AC current. Without the need for a PCB or discrete components, the MLX90290 supports direct connection into automotive and industrial designs.

Enabling position measurements with common permanent magnets, such as AlNiCo and Ferrite, the MLX90290 can compensate for the inherent thermal behaviour of the magnet. Off-the-shelf variants are suited for use with 500ppm/°C materials for AlNiCo/Rare Earth type magnets and 2000ppm/°C materials for low cost Ceramic/Ferrite magnets. Thermal drift is targeted to 0ppm/°C for current sensing applications, enabling the IC to exhibit consistent thermal behaviour with a high bandwidth.

Customised versions are available for high volume applications with filtering, sensitivity and thermal sensitivity drift optimised to meet a specific application’s performance requirements.

Operating over a temperature range from -40 to +150°C, the MLX90290 is supplied in industry standard 3-pin SIP or 3-pin SOT packages. The normal version provides standard 1.27mm pin-to-pin spacing and the lead-formed version features a 2.54mm pin-to-pin spacing suited for welding or automated soldering in sensor modules.
