Seeing the light
Steve Rogerson discusses whether LIDAR can continue its journey to become a sensor technology of choice for autonomous vehicles.LIDAR is not new. The light equivalent to RADAR uses pulsed laser beams and measures their reflections to determine the distance of objects, and it has been around since the 1960s. It was originally used for gathering information about clouds and shot to fame in 1971 when the Apollo 15 mission used it to map the surface ...
Powering growth in voice with $15m funding round
A specialist in voice capture solutions for the consumer electronics market, XMOS, has announced its $15m Series-E funding round. The round was led by Infineon Technologies with additional funding from existing investors Amadeus Capital Partners, Draper Esprit, Foundation Capital and Robert Bosch Venture Capital.
Power MOSFET designed for low power SMPS market
Infineon Technologies is expanding its recently launched CoolMOS P7 superjunction power MOSFET family with a SOT-223 package. The device has been developed as a one-to-one drop-in replacement for DPAK.

This year's semiconductor growth approaches 20%
The 2017 semiconductor market is shaping up as the strongest since 2010 - when the market grew 32% as it bounced back from the 2008-2009 downturn.According to World Semiconductor Trades Statistics (WSTS), the second quarter 2017 semiconductor market was up 5.8% from 1Q 2017 and up 23.7% from a year ago. Much of the market vitality is due to memory - specifically DRAM and NAND flash.
Packaged MEMS microphones offer 70dB signal-to-noise ratio
Addressing the needs for high performance, low noise MEMS microphones,Infineon Technologies is entering the packaged silicon microphone market. The analogue and digital microphones are based on Infineon’s dual backplate MEMS technology and feature a 70dB signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). This is combined with a low distortion level of ten percent at a 135dB sound pressure level (SPL). In a 4x3x1.2mm MEMS package, the microphones are suited for h...
Capacitive technology in wearable devices
With more and more applications requiring high accuracy atmospheric pressure data, engineers are seeking ever more sensitive pressure sensing methods. New sensor technologies that are based on capacitive sensing enable engineers to create miniaturised and very accurate devices while satisfying demanding energy constraints and addressing reliability challenges. By Sampo Härkönen, Senior Manager Pressure Sensor Marketing, Infineon Techno...
IGBT modules offer increased current rating of 150A
With the introduction of the EconoPIM 3 package, Infineon Technologies has expanded its product portfolio of IGBT modules. The current rating of the module is thereby increased from 100A by 50% to 150A. The new power modules serve the growing demand for higher power density within the same footprint. Typical applications are motor controls for drives in elevators, escalators, fans or pumps.
