From Big Ben to the Big Apple in under an hour
After a four year wait, French behemoth Airbus has received approval for a patent to develop an "ultra-rapid air vehicle and related method of aerial locomotion" - a supersonic plane combining a rocket engine, turbojets and ramjets, that could fly from London to New York in under an hour. Inviting comparison with its Anglo-French predecessor, the patented design has been called "Concorde Mark 2" and "Son of Concorde", but has the power to leave i...
Milestone hit with hydrogen fuelled vans
ULEMCo has reached an important milestone for use of hydrogen fuel in its fleet of test vehicles. Sixteen standard Ford Transits, adapted to run on dual hydrogen/diesel, have clocked up over 20,000 miles (over 32,000km) using hydrogen fuel. The vehicles achieved ultra-low emissions of 59g CO2 per kilometre, compared with 234g/km for the standard vehicles, equivalent to a saving of almost 6t of CO2 emissions for the UK to date. The figures are bas...
NTC sensor elements measures temperatures to 650°C
Designed for measuring temperatures up to 650°C, TDK has released an NTC sensor element offering high-precision measurement with a temperature tolerance of about ±1° at 200°C. The device is based on a high-temperature ceramic sensor element that is connected to a metallised aluminium oxide rod and then glass-encapsulated.
Parker’s AC30 helps to mitigate flooding in caravan park pumping application
As residents of the United Kingdom there can be no escaping the floods that have affected our day-to-day lives over the past few years. The UK is experiencing harsher seasons and adverse weather conditions command consistent coverage in both print media and television. We’ve all seen the scenes of villages cut off from the outside world and swollen rivers that have burst their banks. The knock on effect this has for businesses cannot be und...
Reinvented process optimises mesopores for optical detection
Non-metallic mesoporous structures have already demonstrated potential for applications in gas storage, separation, catalysis, ion-exchange, sensing, polymerisation and drug delivery. Metal mesoporous films could have fascinating and useful optical properties as they are effectively the inverse of nanoparticle arrays.
Traction fuel cells reach investment point on hype curve
IDTechEx says that there is divided opinion on the future of traction fuel cells in EVs, though few continue to argue that they will power the majority of EVs. Nonetheless some manufacturers are very enthusiastic, and now could be the beginning of the end of the trough of disillusionment - the time to invest, as analysed in the IDTechEx report Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles 2015-2030: Land, Water, Air.
Motor's improved power-to-weight ratio suits atmospheric satellites
Newcastle University has been chosen by Boeing to develop an ultra-lightweightelectric motorfor an upper atmosphere electric aircraft. These spidery fixed-wing aircraft can have the wingspan of a jumbo jet but the weight of a small car. Such 'atmospheric satellites' are being designed to take 10,000lb payloads into atmospheric orbit at 65,000 ft.
Durable and Reliable Under All Conditions: What Makes Piezo Actuators Suitable for Industrial and Space Applications?
Piezo actuators convert electrical energy directly into mechanical energy and allow for motions with a resolution in the sub-nanometer range. They achieve travel up to approximately one millimeter and high dynamics with frequencies up to several thousand Hertz. There are no frictional parts to limit resolution, also no mechanical wear, as motion is based on crystalline solid state effects. Therefore, piezo actuators are the ideal drive solution f...
Consortium to develop zero-emission LCV
Intelligent Energy, the energy technology group, will lead a UK industry consortium that is to develop a new class of zero-emission, LCVs. By integrating fuel cell technology into BEVs, the consortium will deliver the capability to provide low carbon LCVs with significantly improved range and rapid refuelling.
Hybrid vehicle range extenders: goodbye pistons
Dr Peter Harrop, Chairman, IDTechEx Hybrid vehicles are already big business from hybrid cars, buses and trucks to outdoor forklifts, even hybrid tugboats. Indeed, many hybrid aircraft will soon appear. An increasing majority of hybrid powertrains are series hybrids where the engine only charges the battery: it never drives the wheels. As explained in the IDTechEx report, Range Extenders for Electric Vehicles Land, Water & Air 2015-2025, th...
