Growing interest in 48V mild hybrid vehicles
Whilst showcasing its Switched-Reluctance (SR) motor-generator technology at the SAE 2015 Hybrid & Electric Vehicles Technologies Symposium, Controlled Power Technologies (CPT) witnessed an growing interest in 48V mild hybrid vehicles.
EV batteries & supercabatteries could supercede fuel cells, says report
Launches of fuel cell cars are reportedly planned by up to six carmakers from 2015, including Tata Motors of India, owners of Jaguar Land Rover. Hydrogen fuel cells are portrayed as pivotal in creating success for pure electric cars but the truth is very different. More is explained in the latest IDTechEx report,Future Technology for Hybrid and Pure Electric Cars 2015-2025.
Grant aids research into graphene as an anti-corrosive
Helping industry unlock graphene’s potential, 2-DTech has embarked upon research which it says could have a huge impact on the effectiveness of electronics in industry. 2-DTech, a spin-off from the University of Manchester (where graphene was first isolated), has secured a £100,000 Innovate UK grant to finance a long term project, aiming to find ways to improve anti-corrosive coatings by incorporating graphene.
Range extender market for hybrid EVs set to explode
An IDTechEX report has recently been released, which forecasts the growing market for EVsin 37 categories of land, water and airborne e-vehicle, and predicts that electric buses will replace five million conventional buses in Asia. There are two types of these buses - one set not requiring plugging in, which will be found outside of East Asia, whilst East Asia will pay host to the other types - PHEVs and PEVs.
High Performance Seals Handle Rapid Gas Decompression In Extreme Environments
Increasing oil extraction pressures and temperatures, aggressive chemicals and rapid gas decompression (RGD) in new, more difficult drilling sites are creating operating environments beyond the capabilities of most elastomers. DuPont Kalrez 0090 (K-312 “A” O-rings) perfluoroelastomer sealing parts, however, were developed to provide enhanced rapid gas decompression resistance in aggressive environments and have received the industry b...
South Bank pays host to London's most innovative research
London South Bank University is the number one London modern university for world leading and internationally excellent research in engineering, according to the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014.LSBU, which focusses on applied research to address real world challenges, emerged as London's top modern university for ‘General Engineering’ research, with the majority of its projects given either a 4 (world-leading)- or 3 (internat...
Low-emission hydrogen-fuelled vehicles are realised
Diesel-to-hydrofuel converted vehicles have been verified as achieving the definitions of ultra-low status by the Vehicle Certification Agency (VCA). Ford Transit vans retrofitted with ULEMCo’s hydrogen gas system achieved 59g/km CO2under test, representing a 70% reduction on the unconverted equivalent vehicle. Tailpipe emissions also showed a 40% reduction in harmful NOx.
Ultrasound provides cleaner, more efficient degassing
Scientists at Brunel University have confirmed that treating molten metal with ultrasound is a cleaner, greener, more efficient route to producing high quality castings. At 700°C, molten aluminium alloys naturally contain a high percentage of dissolved hydrogen, leaving a highly porous result if unaddressed. The most widely-used method of hydrogen removal, argon rotary degassing, is energy intensive and requires costly components.
Wireless networking for the industrial IoT
Monitoring and measuring even very simple parameters improves processes, reduces downtime and saves money. By Mike Fahrion, Director of Product Management, B&B Electronics.
Sophisticated X-ray ensures hassle-free PCBA inspection
Subcontract manufacturers of PCBAs generally use a number of different tools for quality control, such as flying probe testers, camera-based automated optical inspection and X-ray equipment. Very few UK manufacturers can boast such sophisticated X-ray inspection capability as Newbury Electronics, following the company’s purchase of a Nikon Metrology XT V160 in January 2014.
