Motor's improved power-to-weight ratio suits atmospheric satellites
Newcastle University has been chosen by Boeing to develop an ultra-lightweightelectric motorfor an upper atmosphere electric aircraft. These spidery fixed-wing aircraft can have the wingspan of a jumbo jet but the weight of a small car. Such 'atmospheric satellites' are being designed to take 10,000lb payloads into atmospheric orbit at 65,000 ft.
50kg micro-satellite achieves 348Mb/s download speed
Recently, 50kg-class micro satellites have been able to observe the Earth’s surface with high resolution, enabling the detection of ground-level objects with a size of several metres. These small satellites, however, cannot currently send large quantities of image data to the ground station, due to power and mass constraints.
Ultracapacitors store energy efficiently & instantly
An energy storage technology capable of providing surges of power on satellites and other spacecraft has been chosen by the European Space Agency (ESA) for possible orbit in 2018. Developed by Skeleton Technologies, this ultracapacitor technology is 60 times lighter and 30 times more efficient than the batteries it will replace.
'World's first' high-symbol-rate satellite demodulator chip
The world’s first 500MBd high-symbol-rate satellite demodulator chip has been released by STMicroelectronics. The STiD135 enables significantly more efficient bandwidth usage and increased throughput in satellite internet provisioning when deployed with transponders aimed at using the higher frequency bands to send data via Ka-band communication satellites.
GNSS module combines GPS, Glonass, Beidou, Galileo & SBAS
A GNSS module that combines GPS, Glonass, Beidou, Galileo and SBAS for the creation of high-performance position reporting and navigation solutions has been released by Telit Wireless Solutions. The SE868-V3 can navigate to -162dBm and track to -166dBm, thereby providing improved performance in harsh environments.
Telemetry controller IC is radiation tolerant to 100kRad TID
A telemetry controller IC, which integrates the required functions in satellite telemetry systems and interfaces with radiation tolerant FPGAs, has been introduced by Microsemi. The LX7730 is the first device to be released from the company’s radiation tolerant Space System Manager (SSM) family of special purpose mixed signal devices.
CW technology & engineering conference
The inaugural Cambridge Wireless Engineering and Technology Conference (CWTEC) recently set out to look at whether the wireless industry needs to integrate or differentiate and concluded that it should do both. Leading industry experts explored the future of the UK’s telecommunications infrastructure, spanning mobile, satellite, TV, IoT and wearable technology, focusing on the impact on licensed and unlicensed spectrum and the design of nex...
FPGAs withstand radiation without configuration scrubbing
Microsemi has announced the RTG4 high-speed signal processing radiation-tolerant FPGA family. The RTG4’s reprogrammable flash technology offers complete immunity to radiation-induced configuration upsets in the harshest radiation environments, requiring no configuration scrubbing, unlike SRAM FPGA technology. RTG4 supports space applications requiring up to 150,000 logic elements and up to 300MHz of system performance.
LDS V8 combo shaker supports low carbon mobility research
Warwick Manufacturing Group (WMG) at the University of Warwick has invested in an LDS V8 combo shaker, to support its government-funded research into low carbon mobility. The V8 system enables WMG’s team to carry out vibration tests on large lithium-ion battery systems (up to 600kg in weight), as they go through the cycling process (charge/discharge).
Custom software accelerates 5G research
Flexibility is the watchword in the early stages of 5G research when investiugating new waveforms, frequency bands and bandwidths. Keysight Technologies has developed N7608B Signal Studio for custom modulation software that helps speed time to insight by making it easier to create custom waveforms for 5G applications.
